ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell sprint football team scored on its first three possessions and never looked back as it closed out the 2010 season with a resounding 45-14 victory over Mansfield this evening at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y. With the victory, the Big Red closes out the season with a 5-2 record overall and a mark of 3-2 in the CSFL, good for third overall in the conference standings.
Doug Famularo led the charge for the Big Red, scoring Cornell's first three touchdowns on rushes of 14, 11 and 1-yard. In total, he carried 17 times for a total of 111 yards, averaging 6.5 yards per rush. Quarterback
Elliot Corey used his arm and his feet to command the offense, connecting on 11-of-16 pass attempts for 134 yards and rushing 12 times for 56 yards. He tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to
Timothy Bruhn and rushed five yards for another score. Backup quarterback
Brendan Miller also rushed for a touchdown and
Alex Perilstein connected on a 30-yard field goal to round out the scoring.
The Big Red defense held Mansfield to just eight first down and 208 yards of total offense, while forcing three turnovers. Clay Hemminger led the squad with nine total tackles, while
Timothy Dooley and
Patrick Sipple registered five tackles apiece. Cornell racked up 10 tackle for a loss of 28 yards and
John Mackintosh, Charles Clausner and
Jim Barger all registered one interception.
Mansfield (2-5, 1-4 CSFL) was led by Michael Wallace, who carried the ball 20 times for 131 yards, including a touchdown run of 87 yards early in the second quarter to make it a 21-7 game. Quarterback Kode Planke struggled to an 8-of-21 performance, throwing for 83 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. The Mounties defense was led by Ako Sayed with 15 tackles, including three tackles for a loss of 16 yards, while Trevor McHenry racked up 10 tackles.
After charging out to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, Wallace opened up the second quarter with an 87-yard touchdown run when he found a seam on the right side of the line. Perilstein answered with a 30-yard field goal with just over five minutes to play, but a last second 39-yard touchdown reception by Kevin Valentine with 15 seconds to play cut the Big Red's lead to 24-14 at the intermission.
That was as close as it got, as Cornell rattled off three more touchdowns to account for the 45-14 final. The first came at the 9:06 mark of the third quarter when Corey ran five yards to pay dirt. Just under four minutes later, Bruhn caught a 12-yard pass from Corey. Early in the fourth, Barger's 34-yard interception return set up a one-yard touchdown rush by Miller.
From there the Big Red defense took over and held off Mansfield for the victory.
