POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Locke Jillson, Kirill Gotovets and Jordan Kary each had a goal and an assist as the Cornell men's hockey team picked up its first victory of the season, scoring a 6-1 win at Clarkson on Saturday night at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.
Dan Nicholls added a pair of assists, while Dustin Mowrey, Braden Birch and Joe Devin each added a goal for the Big Red (1-3, 1-1 ECAC Hockey). Patrick Kennedy, Rodger Craig, Nick D'Agostino and Sean Whitney each added an assist on the night, as 12 of the 18 skaters collected a point for the Big Red. Freshman goaltender Andy Iles earned the victory in his first career road start, stopping 35 shots for the win.
For Clarkson (4-3-2, 0-1-1 ECAC Hockey), Brandon DeFazio scored the lone goal of the night, with Louke Oakley and Mark Borowiecki adding assists. Paul Karpowich took the loss in net, stopping 28 Cornell shots on the evening.
Cornell got on the scoreboard first for the first time this season at the 13:42 mark of the first period on a play that began and ended with Kary. Kary made a heads-up play to keep the puck in the Clarkson zone, intercepting an errant pass, and started a cycle that saw the puck remain in the offensive end. With the puck in the corner on the stick of Miller, he was dispossesed but the loose puck ended up on Nicholls' stick. Nicholls then took the puck behind the goal and slipped a pass to Kary standing all alone at the top of the crease, and the junior's backhanded wrist shot found its way over the glove side shoulder of Karpowich for the 1-0 lead.
Cornell would take that lead into the second period with Iles stopping 10 shots during the first period. In the second, Iles made several outstanding saves to keep the Knights off the scoreboard, and it would be Kary who would play a huge role in expanding the Cornell lead. Kary again kept the puck on the cycle before sending a pass to the central point for Birch. Birch then skated past a Clarkson defender before ripping a shot through a screen for his first career goal.
Just over two and a half minutes, it was Gotovets collecting his first career goal with a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle to the right of Karpowich. Gotovets began the play with a shot that was stopped by the goaltender, but the rebound, played out away from the slot by the Clarkson defense, was tipped back to Gotovets by Nicholls, and the freshman defenseman would capitalize on his second chance, ripping a shot over the shoulder of Karpowich for the 3-0 Cornell lead.
Jillson added to the margin with his first goal of the year 50 seconds later with the Big Red on the power play after a high-sticking call on Clarkson's Alex Boak. D'Agostino fired a shot through traffic from the center point that was stopped, but the rebound lay in front of a pile of bodies in between the circles, and Jillson stepped up and lifted a shot just underneath the crossbar to make the score 4-0 Cornell.
Clarkson finally solved Iles at the 16:03 mark of the period when Louke Oakley carried the puck into the Cornell zone and laid it off for DeFazio, whose one-timer found its way under the outstretched right leg of the freshman goaltender.
In the third period, Mowrey made the score 5-1 with his third goal of the season, following up a rebound from a shot by Jillson and popping the puck over the outstretched leg of Karpowich midway through the third period.
Cornell returns home on Friday to take on Quinnipiac, opening up a four-game homestand at Lynah Rink. The Big Red will face the Bobcats on Friday, Nov. 12, in a 7 p.m. contest.
