NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Freshman
Gabby Sullivan won a pair of matches in straight sets Friday to advance through the qualifier and into the main draw of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships for women's tennis at Yale University.
Sullivan was one of eight qualifiers out of a field of 32. She defeated Penn's Jaime Yapp-Singh, 6-4, 6-2, to start the day before dispatching of Seton Hall's Elizabeth Verow, 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman
Nina Turudic was also in action, securing a big three-set victory over the qualifier's third seed, Dartmouth's Rachel Decker-Sadowski, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (1). But Fordham's Bella Genkina then eliminated Turudic with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the next round.
With Sullivan advancing, Cornell has five competitors in the singles main draw. She joins juniors
Christine Ordway and
Sarah O'Neil, as well as sophomore
Ryann Young and freshman
Lauren Frazier. Ordway and Young have first-round byes, though the other three will open play Saturday morning.
Doubles play also got going Friday, with the tandem of Frazier and Sullivan advancing to the Round of 16 after a pair of victories. The Big Red's team upset Dartmouth's Melissa Masuoka and Akiko Okuda, the eight seed, 8-5, before toppling a pair from Boston University, 8-4.
Ordway and O'Neil are also still alive after an opening-round victory over Drexel's Zeynep Mafa and Marcela Rosales, 8-4.
