ITHACA, N.Y. – On Cornell women's basketball's senior night, it was a sophomore and a trio of freshmen that led the Big Red to a 57-51 victory over Penn in Newman Arena. With the win, Cornell improved to 6-20 overall (3-9 Ivy League), while the Quakers fall to 10-15 (4-7).

Sophomore Clare Fitzpatrick posted a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double, while freshmen Stephanie Long and Shelby Lyman chipped in 15 and 11 points, respectively. Long also grabbed six rebounds and handed out two assists. Sophomore Allyson DiMagno chipped in seven points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal.

Playing her final career home game in front of a large contingent of fans, Susie Doyle grabbed six rebounds, scored four points and had one steal and one assist.

Penn was led by Alyssa Baron's 17 points. Jess Knapp added 15 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Erin Power finished with 10 points.

Cornell held the significant 41-25 edge in rebounds, helping it to overcome 20 turnovers. The Quakers turned the ball over just nine times.

The Big Red shot 41 percent from the floor, 37 percent from 3-point range and was a perfect 14-of-14 from the charity stripe, a mark that proved critical as the team connected on four free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.

Penn finished at just 35 percent overall and 25 percent from beyond the arc.

The Big Red jumped out to an 11-2 lead at the 10:47 mark, thanks to five points from Lyman and four points from Fitzpatrick, but a 7-3 run by Penn made it just a five-point game with 8:13 to play in the half.

A trey by Long pushed Cornell's lead back to eight points, but a layup from Knapp and two made free throws by Brianna Bradford once again got the Quakers within striking distance, 17-13. A try by Lyman and two free throws by Allie Munson, sandwiched around a single Penn free throw gave Cornell a 22-14 lead with 3:54 to play.

Five straight points by Baron quickly made it a one-possession game with just over two minutes remaining in the half, but the Big Red closed out the period with five unanswered points of its own on a pair of free throws from DiMagno and a jumper from Long to go into the intermission with the 27-19 lead.

The Quakers cut Cornell's lead to four points four times through the first eight minutes of the second half, but each time the Big Red responded with a bucket to restore its six-to-eight-point cushion. The home team eventually pushed its lead to 12 points on back-to-back treys from Long and DiMagno, followed by a long jumper from Taylor Flynn, as Cornell went up, 43-31, with 10:07 to play.

The Big Red maintained a comfortable cushion for more than seven minutes before Penn turned up the defensive pressure and erased a seven-point Cornell lead to knot the game at 51-51 with just over one minute to play.

A layup by Flynn with 47 seconds to play put the Big Red back up by two points and some stout defense by Cornell held Penn scoreless the rest of the way. Cornell hit four straight free throws to seal the victory.

The Big Red is back in action next weekend as it wraps up the 2010-11 season on the road, travelling to Brown and Yale on Friday, March 4, and Saturday, March 5, respectively. Both games are slated to tip-off at 7 p.m.
