PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Cornell baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning but could not overcome a seven-run deficit, falling to Temple, 9-6, on Friday afternoon at DeVincent Field on the campus of LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Pa. The loss drops Cornell to 0-5 on the year, while Temple improved to 6-5 with the victory.
Ben Swinford led the way on the day for the Big Red offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while
Brenton Peters,
Brandon Lee,
Ryan Plantier and
Marshall Yanzick each went 2-for-4. Lee and
Frank Hager each scored a pair of runs on the day for the Big Red.
On the mound,
Corey Pappel got the start and worked six strong innings, allowing four runs, but only three of them earned, on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Houston Hawley worked a third of an inning and allowed a pair of runs, while
Joe Sinopoli went an inning and two-thirds, allowing three runs on five hits.
Temple got out to an early lead, scoring in the first inning, but the Big Red offense responded in the second with an RBI single by
Conor McCabe, scoring Lee, but the Owls regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the second and went ahead, 3-1, with a run in the bottom of the third. Cornell again cut into the lead in the fifth, with Hager scoring on Swinford's two-out RBI single to center, but Temple went ahead, 4-2, with a single run in the bottom of the fifth.
Temple expanded the lead to 9-2 with two runs in the seventh, both charged to Hawley, and three more in the eighth, all on Sinopoli's line, before Cornell rallied in the top of the ninth. Yanzick led off the inning with a single to first, then scored when Peters lined a triple to the gap in right-center. Hager then drew a walk, and both Peters and Hager advanced a base on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to 9-4.
Mickey Brodsky struck out looking for the first out, and Lee followed with a single to right, scoring Hager from second. Swinford followed with his third single of the day, a shot inside the right-field line, moving Lee to third and putting runners on the corners with one out. After Spencer Souza struck out looking for the second out,
Ryan Plantier hit a single up the middle, scoring Lee and moving Swinford to second, but the rally ended with
Anthony Irigoyen's fly out to left to end the contest.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday, taking on St. Joseph's in a 1 p.m. contest at Campbell's Field in Camden, N.J.
