CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Cornell baseball team exploded for four runs in the seventh inning to give it some breathing room and the Big Red pitching staff did the rest, topping Saint Joseph's 9-3 on Saturday afternoon at Campbell's Field. The win snapped a five-game skid to open the season, while the Hawks fell to 5-10 with the loss.
Big Red hurlers Taylor Wood and Dan Lea combined to scatter nine hits while strikeout out seven against just one walk. Wood evened his record at 1-1 on the season by pitching 6.0 solid innings, allowing two earned runs. Lea picked up the save with three innings of one-hit ball, striking out three and walking one.
Four different Big Red hitters collected a pair of hits, with Brenton Peters, Ben Swinford and Brandon Lee each going 2-for-4, while Marshall Yanzick was 2-for-5 at the top of the lineup. Frank Hager had the team's lone extra-base hit with a triple in the eighth inning. The top eight hitters in the lineup each collected at least one hit.
Cornell never trailed, going up 1-0, 2-1 and 4-2 before its four-run explosion while hanging on to a 4-3 lead heading into the seventh inning. four consecutive singles by Swinford, Ryan Plantier, Peters and Mike Lopez kept the four-run, six-hit inning going.
