NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Big Red women's basketball team held a slim one-point lead with just over four minutes to play, but Yale closed the game on a 10-2 run to escape the upset, defeating Cornell, 58-51 at Payne Whitney Gym in New Haven, Conn. The game featured 18 lead changes and five ties, but in the end, Cornell could not hold on and ends the season with a 6-22 record overall and a mark of 3-11 in the Ivy League.

Allyson DiMagno registered her first career double-double with a team-high 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, as she helped the Big Red to a 36-27 advantage on the glass. Joining her with a team-high 14 points was Shelby Lyman, while Clare Fitzpatrick finished with 10 points.

Yale (14-14, 10-4) was led by Mady Gobrecht's 15 points and seven assists. Megan Vazquez and Michelle Cashen finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Vazquez also added a team-high five rebounds.

Cornell shot well, hitting 37 percent from the floor (17-of-46) and 50 percent from the 3-point range (6-of-12), while the Bulldogs rebounded from a slow start to finish at 38 percent overall (18-of-48) and 27 percent from beyond the arc (4-of-15). Yale made 11-of-12 free throws in the first half, compared to Cornell's 6-of-6 performance, to keep the score close at the intermission, and finished the game at 18-of-22 from the free throw line, while the Big Red made 11-of-15.

The Big Red used some tough defense to recover from an early 11-5 deficit, as seven unanswered points, including three from DiMagno and two each from Taylor Flynn and Stephanie Long, gave Cornell a 12-11 lead at the 13:01 mark.

A bucket from Allie Messimer and a pair of free throws by Gobrecht returned the lead to the home team (16-12), but a 7-2 run, which included a deep trey from Lyman returned the one-point lead to Cornell, 19-18 with 6:50 to play in the half.

Cashen knocked down a pair of free throws on Yale's next trip down the court, but the Big Red went up by one-point once again when Spencer Lane came up with a steal and fed Lyman for the fastbreak layup.

Free throws by Gobrecht again returned the lead to the Bulldogs, but a great give-and-go from Lane to Fitzpatrick resulted in an uncontested layup to put the Big Red up, 23-22, at the 4:31 mark.

Cornell lost the lead again as Yale used a small 3-0 run to go up by one (27-26), but the Big Red responded with four unanswered points, closing the half with a layup from Fitzpatrick, off a great pass from DiMagno, and a pair of free throws by DiMagno, to take a 30-27 lead into halftime.

DiMagno hit a trey in the opening moments of the second half and then grabbed a hard-fought offensive board, getting fouled in the process, and hit one free throw to extend Cornell's lead to 34-27 with 17:25 to play.

Yale responded with back-to-back buckets to close the gap, but a traditional three-point play by Lyman returned a five-point lead to the Big Red.

A 10-2 run put the Bulldogs up, 41-39, at the 12:18 mark but a deep trey from the left corner by Lyman ended the run and temporarily returned the one-point lead to Cornell.

Three straight points by Gobrecht put Yale back up 44-42 with under 10 minutes to play.

Fitzpatrick knotted the game at 44-44 with a hard drive to the basket, then grabbed a defensive rebound on Yale's next possession to give the ball back to the Big Red. Allie Munson drew a foul on the other end and hit one free throw to put Cornell back on top, 45-44 with 7:57 to play.

A fade-away jumper by Fitzpatrick extended the Big Red's lead to 47-44, but four unanswered Yale points returned the 48-47 lead to the home team.

Flynn gave the lead back to the Big Red when she collected an offensive rebound and hit a wide-open layup to put Cornell up by one (49-48) with under four minutes to play.

The Big Red offense stalled after that, hitting just one field goal the rest of the way as Yale used back-to-back layups to take the lead and then hit 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch for the 58-81 victory.
