NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Yale jumped out to a lead less than a minute into the game, but was then swamped by 13 straight Cornell goals as the visitors ran away for a 14-3 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Reese Stadium. Cornell won its second straight contest and improved to 5-7 (3-4 Ivy), while Yale fell to 2-11 (0-6 Ivy).
Jessi Steinberg scored four goals,
Shannon McHugh scored three times and the Big Red had nine players find the back of the net at least once. Cornell's defense was as impressive as its offense, allowing just 11 total shots, forcing 10 caused turnovers, forcing six bad clears and dominating the draw circle (16-3). McHugh won three draws,
Ali O'Neil collected four ground ball wins and
Cacki Helmer caused four turnovers. In goal,
Kyla Dambach made three saves and allowed just one goal in the first 30 minutes before giving way to backup
Courtney Gallagher in the second half.
Adrienne Tarver scored all three of Yale's goals and took five of the team's 11 shots in the loss. Kaitlyn Flatley posted five caused turnovers and Fielding Kidd won three ground balls. In goal, Erin McMullan prevented worse damage by making 10 saves, including nine in the second half.
After Yale got on the board just 49 seconds into the contest, Cornell responded with thunder.
Olivia Knotts got the Big Red started four minutes later to tie the score and open the floodgates. Steinberg and McHugh combined for five goals over the next 15 minutes, including three coming on free position attempts. THe visitors went into the break with a comfortable 9-1 edge.
The second half didn't get any better for the Bulldogs. The home team didn't attempt a shot until Tarver's goal with 7:37 left in the contest to cut the deficit to 13-2, but couldn't keep the clock from running.

Morgan Axenfeld all scored their first goals of the season after halftime as Cornell ended conference play with consecutive victories.
The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday, April 26 at 7 p.m. against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.
