THE HEAD COACH
Coach
Terry Cullen begins his 46th season at the helm of the Big Red program with a 161-123-7 record (.565). Cullen has been a member of the coaching staff since 1964 and officially became the
Terry Cullen Head Coach of Sprint Football in 2001.
THE CO-HEAD COACH
In August 2008, Cornell announced that
Bart Guccia would assume a majority of the on-field coaching and gameday decisions for the Big Red. Guccia is now in his sixth year with the team and has posted a 14-7 record (.667) in his new role.
ABOUT POST
The Eagles, based in Waterbury, Conn., are in just their second season ever of sprint football and their first season in the CSFL. In its inaugural season in 2010, Post went 1-3, defeating Princeton 33-18 for its first win in program history. Though they played just a four-game schedule last year, the Eagles are now playing a full six-game season with byes at the start and end of the year. The team's game against Cornell is its season opener.
THE SERIES WITH POST
Cornell was one of the Eagles' four games last year, and the Big Red emerged victorious 22-14 thanks to 13 fourth-quarter points. Post held a 14-9 lead entering the fourth quarter, but two
Alex Perilstein field goals put Cornell ahead 15-14, and a Doug Famularo 37-yard touchdown run gave the Big Red an eight-point lead with 1:57 to go. Cornell outrushed Post 221-23 in the game.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Post has yet to play a game this season, but the team lost its starting quarterback, leading rusher and top receiver from 2010. Daniel Awwad, the Eagles' leader from last season in total yards, is back for the 2011 year, and linebacker Kyle Lagasse, who topped Post with 28 tackles last season, is also returning.
A WIN OVER THE EAGLES WOULD…
...keep Cornell atop the CSFL standings with a 2-0 record…keep the Big Red unbeaten lifetime against Post…put Cornell at 2-0 for the second year in a row…start the home schedule with a win for the sixth consecutive year.
LAST TIME OUT
Cornell kicked off its season with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in Pennsylvania against Mansfield. The Mounties held a 23-20 advantage entering the fourth quarter before the Big Red scored 17 unanswered points to win 37-23.
Abe Mellinger started the fourth quarter with a 50-yard touchdown catch from quarterback
Brendan Miller. Kicker
John Rodriguez followed with a 31-yarder to increase Cornell's lead to a touchdown, and then
Michael Monahan finished things off with a 45-yard touchdown reception.
CATCHING THEM OFF GUARD
Mellinger, in his first game with the Big Red, caught five passes for a total of 150 yards and two touchdowns. His 30 yards per catch leads the CSFL, and he greatly helped quarterback
Brendan Miller start the year second in the league with 288 yards passing. Mellinger, a transfer from Junianta College, calls Ronks, Pa., home.
TACKLING MACHINES
Senior linebacker
Timothy Dooley and senior defensive lineman
Colin Lounsberry are near the top of the CSFL in total tackles. Through the first week, the two are tied for second with 10 tackles apiece. Dooley has six individual tackles while Lounsberry has four individual tackles, a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.
STREAK SNAPPED
Entering last weekend's game against Mansfield, Cornell had rushed for at least 100 yards in its last 11 games. But with just 21 yards on the ground Saturday, that streak, dating back to a 44-0 win against Princeton on Oct. 9, 2009, came to an end.
UP NEXT
Cornell is back at home next Friday hosting the Tigers of Princeton, who went winless last season. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field.
