ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior co-captain
Katie Kellner crossed the finish line first,
Emily Shearer was right behind her for second and
Rachel Sorna took third place as the Big Red women's cross country team claimed the Heptagonal Championship for the second consecutive year at West Windsor Fields in Princeton, N.J. on Saturday morning.
No. 7 Cornell finished with 31 points, well ahead of second-place Princeton's 91. Cornell's point total was the eighth-best in meet history and the team's margin of victory was the third greatest in women's Heps history.
Kellner won the Ivy League championship for the first time in her Big Red career, and the team's victory was the sixth in school history. Kellner becomes the first individual to win for Cornell since Laura Woeller '95 in 1994.
Saturday marked only the fourth time in league history that one team had runners finish 1-2-3 and the first time since Princeton accomplished that feat in 2008.
Kellner crossed the finish line of the six-kilometer course in a time of 20:28.5, edging out Shearer by 2.3 seconds. Sorna was right behind Shearer at 20:31.8 as all three of Cornell's finishers were within 3.3 seconds of one another.
Kellner, Shearer and Sorna were all named to the All-Ivy First Team for their efforts.
The fourh Big Red runner was
Devin McMahon who placed 10th overall in a time of 20:51.8. McMahon earned Second Team All-Ivy status for the second consecutive year.
Caroline Kellner was the Big Red's fifth scorer, taking 15th place overall and just missing a Second-Team All-Ivy nod. She finished in 20:58.5 as Cornell was the only team whose top five runners all finished under 21 minutes.
Also running well for the Big Red was senior
Kate Rosettie, who took sixth place for Cornell and 20th overall in 21:08.5. Freshman
Dina Iacone rounded out the Big Red top seven with a 28th-place showing in 21:24.5.
Cornell is the first repeat champions since Princeton won five consecutive Heps titles from 2006-2010. This is the first Cornell repeat since the Big Red won three straight championships from 1991-93.
The Big Red had five other runners in the race: senior co-captain
Genna Hartung (32nd, 21:38.3), senior co-captain
Kelsey Karys (36th, 21:42.8), sophomore Bori Toszer (40th, 21:48.8), freshman Claire Devoe (43rd, 21:52.8) and sophomore
Marianne Collard (44th, 21:52.2).
All 12 Cornell runners finished before any other school got its eighth runner across the line.
Next up for Cornell is the Northeast Regional in two weeks with a berth in the NCAA Championships on the line.
