ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 8 Cornell women's cross country team entered Friday's NCAA Northeast Regional in Madison, Conn., as the top team in the region with a chance to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in two weeks.
Instead, the Big Red placed third, one shy of an automatic bid, in the 37-team field and will have to hope for an NCAA at-large berth from the selection committee on Saturday.
The Big Red's third place finish came thanks to 118 points in the race. No. 20 Providence – ranked third in the region – took home the top prize with a 46-point effort. No. 16 Connecticut took second place and the final NCAA automatic bid with 67 points.
Cornell's top finisher was senior co-captain
Katie Kellner. The best runner in all but one race for the Big Red this season, Kellner had a ninth-place showing. She completed the six-kilometer course in 20:13.9.
Teammate
Rachel Sorna finished in 11th place overall, crossing the finish line in 20:18.6.
Emily Shearer was not far behind, taking 15th with a time of 20:21.0.
Rounding out Cornell's scoring was
Devin McMahon (38th, 20:54.1) and
Caroline Kellner (45th, 21:03.7).
Two other runners competed for Cornell as well but finished out of the scoring. Senior
Kate Rosettie finished 52nd with a time of 21:14.4 while senior
Genna Hartung was seventh for Cornell and 59th overall in 21:19.8. All told, 253 women competed in the race.
The Big Red took third place in the region last year as well but did not earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. This year's chances are stronger considering the team is ranked No. 8 in the country.
