ITHACA, N.Y. --
Brenton Peters hit three doubles and drove in a pair of runs, and junior
Mike Kazley pitched a perfect three innings of relief to earn his first collegiate victory in the baseball team's 9-5 victory over Binghamton on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Hoy Field.
The Big Red also got two hits apiece from
Frank Hager and
Kevin Tatum, hitting back-to-back in the order, using a four-run fourth inning to pull ahead of the Bearcats. Binghamton (15-17) got all of its runs in the second inning, but mustered just one hit over the final seven innings against six Cornell relievers.
Peters didn't waste any time getting the offense going for the Big Red, leading off the bottom of the first with a double down the right-field line.
Brian Billigen singled to center with one out, allowing Peters to come around and score the game's first run. Billigen then stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Hager's RBI double down the left-field line plated Billigen, and the Big Red enjoyed an early 2-0 lead.
But the Bearcats answered with five runs in the second. Just two Binghamton runners reached base after that, and neither made it past first base against relievers Kazley,
Jeeter Ishida, T.J. Parthemer,
Houston Hawley and
Kellen Urbon. Kazley fanned three without allowing a hit in his three innings of work.
During that stretch, the Big Red regained the lead. With two out and runners on the corners in the fourth,
JD Whetsel drew a walk that also resulted in a wild pitch on the fourth ball to allow Hager to score from third. Peters double then plated
Brandon Lee from second. A wild pitch and a passed ball led to the Big Red's next two runs to score in the frame.
Cornell added another run in the fifth. Tatum roped a one-out single through the left side, then moved up to second on a wild pitch. Lee blooped a single just inside the right-field line to drive in Tatum, expanding Cornell's lead to 7-5.
The final two runs came in the eighth, produced largely by team speed. Pinch-running
Spenser Souza stole second, then advanced to third on a groundout. The speed of Whetsel forced a throwing error that extended the inning, allowing Whetsel to reach with two out and Souza to score. Peters then followed with his third two-bagger of the night, scoring Whetsel.
With the victory, Cornell (28-11-1) moves within one win of the program record for most victories in a season. The Big Red returns to Hoy Field for Senior Day with a noon doubleheader on Friday against Princeton. One win against the Tigers – either on Friday, or in Sunday's doubleheader at Princeton – would clinch both the Ivy League Lou Gehrig Division title and home-field advantage for the league championship series the following weekend.
