PRINCETON, N.J. --
Kristen Towne's two-out single in the 14th inning staked Cornell to a lead and
Alyson Onyon closed Princeton out as the Big Red won the longest game in program history, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Class of 1895 Field. The Big Red completed the doubleheader sweep with a 6-4 win in the nightcap. Cornell improved to 22-21 (13-5 Ivy).
Cornell needs to sweep both games of Sunday's doubleheader to force a one-game playoff at Penn for the Ivy League South Division title after the Quakers completed a four-game sweep of the Columbia on Saturday afternoon.
The 14th inning thriller brings the Big Red back to within a half-game of Penn in the Ivy League South Division standings. Cornell set a number of school records, with Onyon's epic performance at the forefront. Onyon went all 14.0 innings, a full two innings past the previous school record, and scattered eight hits and six walks along the way. She stranded 12 Tiger baserunners with both her pitching and fielding. Onyon was credited with a school-record 10 defensive assists.
Freshman Clare Feely was 3-for-6 and scored the go-ahead run in the 14th inning, with Towne driving in the run with her second hit of the day. Lauren Bucolo and Linda Laeufer also had two hits apiece for the Big Red. Both Towne and Laeufer tied school records with their seven at bats in a game, while senior Morgan Cawley was credited with a school-record 22 putouts.
Onyon was matched pitch for pitch by Princeton's Alex Peyton, who also went the distance and gave up 10 hits and just one earned run with seven strikeouts in taking the hard-luck loss. Lizzy Pierce had three of the Tigers' eight hits and was the lone Princeton player with more than one.
Erin Keene led off the 13th inning with a double to left-center, but was stranded. That was a half inning after the Big Red got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game going.
The Big Red got on the board in the first after Laeufer struck out to lead off the game, but reached on a wild pitch. After a fielder's choice, Towne hit a blast down the first base line that hit the fielder and kicked off into the dugout to put runners on second and third. Keene then hit a hard liner to right to score Cornell's first run.
The Tigers tied it back up in the third when Alyssa Schmidt hit a two-out single to score Lizzy Pierce, who opened the frame up with a single and advanced to second on a walk.
That's where the game would stand for the next 11 innings until the Big Red broke through in the 14th. Feely collected her third hit with one out, and after Laeufer fouled out, Jenny Edwards drew a walk. Advancing Feely a base was all Towne would need, as her single to center scored the rooke from second for the go-ahead run.
Princeton would put runners on first and second with no one out in the 14th, but Onyon would reire the next three batters in order to close out the win.
The previous school record for innings played by the Big Red was 12 during a 7-1 win, ironically, also at Princeton during the 2004 campaign.
Cornell jumped out to a 5-1 lead early and cruised to the sweep in game two. Christina Villalon was 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a two-run double in the first that staked the Big Red to a 3-0 lead. Towne stayed hot with a 2-for-4 afternoon, with Lauren Bucolo also posting two hits.
The pitching trio of Jenna Stoller, Sammy Roth and Lauren Marx slowed down the Tigers enough to pick up the hard-fought wijn. Marx pitched the final four innings out of the bullpen, allowing just four hits and one earned run.
