VESTAL, N.Y. -- Cornell continued its hot play by bringing out the big bats, reaching the 25-win plateau for the 16th straight year with a 4-3 comeback win at Binghamton on Wednesday afternoon at East Gym Field. Cornell dropped the nightcap 5-1 to have its five-game win streak snapped. Cornell improved to 25-22, while the Bearcats are now 17-28.
The Big Red hit three home runs in the game one win, including bombs by freshman
Linda Laeufer and
Kristen Towne in the sixth inning to first tie, then go ahead. That rallied Cornell all the way back from a 3-0 first inning deficit. Senior
Erin Keene homered in the third and sophomore
Sam Creamer also drove in a run in the third to get the Big Red back within a run.
Sophomore
Alyson Onyon improved to 14-4 on the year after shutting down the Bearcats over the final six innings after a rough start. She allowed eight hits and three runs, with BU scoring all three runs with three hits coming in the first.
Laeufer was 2-for-4 with a home run, while six other batters had a hit apiece. Sophomore
Jenny Edwards ended the evening 0-for-1, but drew three walks. Cornell was also flawless in the field in winning its fifth straight contest.
Binghamton jumped out to a 5-0 lead, then hung on despite some tough moments in the seventh in game two. Cornell scored a run in the seventh on a fielder's choice groundout by
Christina Villalon with one out. Cornell left the bases loaded, striking out twice with the tying run at the plate.
Katie Watts finished the second game 3-for-3 with a double and a walk as the Big Red offense put together seven hits. Binghamton pitchers struck out 11 batters, while each of the three Cornell pitchers surrendered at least one run in their appearances.
Cornell and Penn will meet in a one-game playoff for the divisional spot in the Ivy League Championship series on Saturday, May 5 at 12:30 p.m.
