WEST POINT, N.Y. — The women's tennis team returns to action this weekend for the first time in three weeks when it takes on Army in a non-league match at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Cornell (2-0) last competed on Feb. 2, when it notched a pair of 6-1 victories over visiting Maryland-Baltimore County and St. John's at Reis Tennis Center to kick off the dual match portion of its 2012-13 schedule. Senior
Sarah O'Neil (No. 1), junior
Ryann Young (No. 3) and freshmen
Laila Judeh (No. 4) and
Dena Tanenbaum (No. 5) were all 2-0 in singles matches, and the Big Red swept all five of the doubles matches that were played to completion.
The Big Red then lost three matches off its slate when the ECAC Women's Indoor Tennis Championships were canceled. The eight-team event was scheduled for Feb. 15-17 in New York, but a winter storm forced the nixing of the event. Cornell was also originally scheduled to play a second match this weekend, but a Sunday clash with Stony Brook was canceled due to a scheduling conflict.
While Cornell and Army haven't competed in a dual match since 2009, the competitors are familiar with each other through the Black Knights' participation in the Cornell Winter Invitational in January. Cornell was 10-4 in singles matches against Army in singles matches and also had a 3-2 advantages in doubles tilts. The Big Red also won a pair of doubles matches againt the Black Knights at the BJK NTC Collegiate Invitational in October.
Cornell leads the all-time series, 9-1, with the first match coming in 1982 when the Big Red secured a 9-0 victory. The last time the teams met yielded Army's only victory to date, a 6-1 decision on Feb. 15, 2009 in the fifth-place match of the ECAC Indoor Championships.
