NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Senior
Nick Sachvie and junior
Bryan Keating won matches in the final shift Friday, but the men's squash team suffered a 7-2 loss to host Yale in the quarterfinals of the Potter Cup. The Big Red moves on to the consolation bracket of the national championship event, where it will finish anywhere from fifth to eighth.
Keating's victory came at the No. 7 position against Eric Caine. While each game of the tilt was close, Keating needed just the minimum three games to secure the victory, 12-10, 12-10, 11-8, to improve his record to 11-3 on the season.
Sachvie continued his late-season surge with his third consecutive victory at the No. 1 position. He dropped the opening game to Kenneth Chan, but was in control the rest of the way in a four-game victory. It was the second time Sachvie has defeated Chan this season, with the other meeting resulting in a three-game sweep for Sachvie on Jan. 12.
But by that point in the match, fourth-seeded Yale (12-3) had already locked up the match against fifth-seeded Cornell (16-4) after winning the first six matches to be completed.
The top four seeds all won their respective quarterfinal matchups on Friday, meaning the Big Red is the top seed in the consolation semifinals. Cornell will take on eighth-seeded St. Lawrence at noon Saturday, while sixth-seeded Rochester and seventh-seeded Franklin & Marshall will tangle in the other consolation semi. The Big Red defeated St. Lawrence, 6-3, in the teams' regular-season meeting on Jan. 13 at Belkin International Squash Courts.
