ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's squash team celebrated its Senior Day in style on Friday, securing a historic victory over previously undefeated Princeton, 5-4, at Belkin International Squash Courts. It is the Big Red's second victory over the top-ranked Tigers in 49 all-time meetings.
Junior
Bryan Keating clinched the win for Cornell (14-3, 4-2 Ivy) by rallying for a five-set victory at the No. 7 spot and improving his season record to 10-1. Keating lost the second and third games against David Hoffman to fall behind, 2-1, but then came back with 11-5 and 11-9 wins in the final two games to give Cornell its first win over Princeton since Nov. 21, 2004 – in
Mark Devoy's first season as the program's head coach. The last time the teams' met, the Big Red lost to the Tigers in the program's first-ever trip to the semifinals of the national championship
The Big Red took a 2-1 lead after the first rotation. Sophomore
Ryan Todd notched his team-leading 13th victory of the season with a four-game triumph over Taylor Tutrone at No. 6, and freshman
Abhijit Malik won three close games at No. 9 to assure the hosts would hold the lead into the second wave of matches in the building's eastern courts.
Princeton evened the match at 2 with a win at No. 8, but Cornell regained control soon thereafter. Senior co-captain
Owen Butler sailed to a three-game win at the No. 5 spot, then sophomore
Aditya Jagtap fought back from a pair of deficits in the No. 2 match with Samuel Kang by winning in five games. That set the stage for Keating's dramatic winner at No. 7.
Cornell's 14 victories are the highest the program has seen since its record 17 wins in the 1997-98 season. With a win Sunday at Penn, the Big Red can finish as high as a three-way tie for second in the Ivy League or – more likely – a tie for third with the loser of Saturday's Harvard-Yale showdown.
The Big Red will wrap up its regular season on the road, starting with a non-league match Saturday at No. 7 Franklin & Marshall, followed by the finale vs. No. 12 Penn on Sunday.
