Unbeaten Women's Tennis Prepares For Final Non-League Matches

3/12/2013 2:56:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The women's tennis team will attempt to go 8-0 in the spring for the first time since the program started in 1973 when it plays host to Binghamton at 4 p.m. Friday in a non-league match at Reis Tennis Center. The Big Red will then make its annual Spring Break trip with matches at 1 p.m. Monday at Coastal Carolina and 1 p.m. Tuesday at College of Charleston.

The Big Red's hot start continued last weekend with a pair of wins at Alpha Tennis and Fitness in Pittsburgh, as Cornell topped Pittsburgh, 6-1, and Duquesne, 7-0. Freshman Dena Tanenbaum won both of her matches in No. 5 singles, improving to 7-0 on the season. Junior Ryann Young (No. 3) and sophomore Lauren Frazier (No. 6) also swept their respective singles matches to stay undefeated in dual matches this season. Cornell is 38-4 in singles and 17-3 in doubles.

Binghamton (3-9) is looking to snap a five-match losing streak, having been shutout by three Ivy League schools over that stretch — Brown (Feb. 17), Harvard (March 2) and Princeton (March 9). The Bearcats' victories this season have all come on neutral courts vs. Sacred Heart, Seton Hall and Pittsburgh.

Freshmen Agatha Ambrozy and Sara Kohtz are tied for a team-best record of 4-6 in dual matches, and classmate Alexis Tashiro is 3-8. Sophomore Katherine Medianik is the squad's primary No. 1 singles entry. Cornell is 12-2 all-time against Binghamton, including a 6-1 victory in their last meeting on Feb. 26, 2012 at Reis Tennis Center.

Coastal Carolina has a 6-4 record heading into a pair of Thursday matches. The Chanticleers advanced to the Big South Conference championship match last year, finishing with a record a 18-6. But one of those losses came to Cornell, 4-3 on March 23, 2012, when the Big Red's Sarah O'Neil secured the winning point in a three-set No. 1 singles match.

Cornell will be seeking its first victory against College of Charleston in their fourth all-time meeting. The Cougars are 7-5 heading into a Monday match with East Tennessee State and are now unranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, having fallen out of the Top 75 after having been tabbed 61st on March 5.

These three matches will conclude the Big Red's non-league schedule. The team's next match will be its Ivy League opener at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 30 at Columbia.
