HAMDEN, Conn. – The bad news for the men's hockey team on Saturday night was a 10-0 loss to Quinnipiac in Game 2 of an ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series. The good news is that it will have a chance for redemption in a winner-take-all Game 3 rematch at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at TD Bank Sports Center.
Much like in Friday's Game 1, the first period of Saturday's Game 2 was decidedly in favor of the host Bobcats. Quinnipiac jumped on top just 24 seconds into the game when Connor Jones was set up from behind the net for a tap in between
Andy Iles legs from the top of the crease. The onslaught continued with Travis St. Denis' tip-in goal on a shot from the right point at the 7:40 mark.
All told, Quinnipiac had a 17-3 advantage in shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes. Cornell's first shot on frame didn't even come until
Jacob MacDonald uncorked a one-timer from 45 feet into the pads of Bobcats goalie Eric Hartzell at the 12:34 mark. If not for some stellar saves from Iles, the Big Red's first-intermission deficit could have been much larger than two goals. Iles stuffed a Jordan Samuels-Thomas wraparound at 1:50, a point-blank Russell Goodman power-play rebound attempt at 6:23, a Kellen Jones against-the-grain deflection at 14:45, and Jeremy Langlois' open shot from the slot on a three-on-two just a second or two before the buzzer.
Unfortunately for the Big Red, the floodgates opened in Quinnipiac's seven-goal second period. Iles was pulled after the third goal of the frame at the 6:27 mark with an eye toward resting the workhorse for Sunday's game. Senior goalie
Omar Kanji saw the first significant action of his collegiate career, but was left helpless as the Bobcats continued to pour it on with the game already decided. There was plenty of physical play with the teams combining for 184 penalty minutes.
