PRINCETON, N.J. – The women's tennis team started off by taking the doubles point and winning the first set in three singles matches Friday, but it wasn't enough in a 5-2 loss to No. 73 Princeton at Lenz Tennis Center. Cornell will now attempt to break the program record for victories in a season at noon Sunday in its season finale against Penn at Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
In Friday's match against the Tigers, junior
Ryann Young won her No. 3 singles match and teamed with sophomore
Lauren Frazier to start off the match with a 8-5 win against Princeton's tandem of Katherine Flanigan and Emily Hahn at the No. 2 position. The Big Red then took the first point of the day when freshman
Laila Judeh and senior
Sarah O'Neil rallied from down 5-4 to take a 8-6 win over Monica Chow and Katie Goepel at the No. 3 position.
Princeton (12-6, 4-2 Ivy League) roared back with two quick victories at the top two singles spots to take the lead, but the Big Red tied it at 2 with Young's win at No. 3 singles. She rolled to wins in the final four games of the first set, then did the same in the second set for a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Monica Chow.
The Cornell (13-4, 2-4 Ivy) lead was short-lived, though, as Princeton's Emily Hahn won the No. 5 match in straight sets to end Judeh's singles winning streak at three matches. Big Red freshman
Dena Tanenbaum (No. 4) and Frazier (No. 6) won first-set tiebreakers in their respective matches, but both would ultimately fall and bring the final score to 5-2.
