ITHACA, N.Y. – Beverly Yang (saber), Christine McIntosh (foil), Audrey Speer (saber) and Angelica Gangemi (foil) were all honored with the Outstanding Achievement/MVP Award for their respective squads, when the Big Red fencing team handed out its end of season awards last week during their Alumni/Parents/Friends Weekend.

One of the team's captains this past season, Yang posted a 50-22 record overall and 8-10 in the Ivy League, both good for second on the saber squad. She was also the squad's top finisher at the 2013 NCAA Northeast Regional, placing 14th overall.

McIntosh finished the season with a 51-17 record overall and a mark of 9-9 in the conference. One of the team's co-captains this season, she ranked second on the foil squad in wins (51) and winning percentage (75 percent). She placed eighth at the 2013 NCAA Northeast Regional, five spots higher than her initial seeding. McIntosh earned a gold medal in foil at the 2012-13 Temple Fencing Open, placing first among 81 competitors and placed 11th out of 120 competitors at the 2012 North American Cup.

Speer led the saber squad with a record of 53-21. She was also Cornell's top saber at the Ivy League tournament with a mark of 10-8. Speer went on to place 17th at the 2013 NCAA Northeast Regional.

Gangemi  had a successful rookie season with the Big Red, leading lead a deep and talented foil squad with a  record of 55-11 overall and 10-7 in the Ivy League. After entering the competition as the 11th seed, she had the highest finish of any Big Red fencer at the 2013 NCAA Northeast Regional, taking sixth overall. She then placed 14th at the NCAA championship, earning 11 victories overall, including upset wins over Princeton's Ambika Singh (ninth place) and Yale's Lauren Miller (13th place), while posting a touch-differential of -4 (75-79).

In addition to their MVP awards, Yang and McIntosh earned the Captains Awards, presented for their leadership and hard work, while Gangemi earned the team's Outstanding Freshman Award.

April Whitney earned the team's Cointe Award, given to the fencer who shows great sportsmanship throughout the season, given in honor of Coach Cointe. After spending the fall season abroad, Whitney finished the spring season with a 25-11 record overall, including a mark of 9-9 in the Ivy League. She placed 12th overall at the 2013 NCAA Northeast Regional and earned an invitation to her third consecutive NCAA championship, where she finished 17th. Whitney, picked up nine total victories at NCAAs, which included four upsets as she defeated  her teammate Angelica Gangemi, as well as Princeton's Eve Levin (10th place), St. John's Evgeniya Kirpicheva (12th place) and Ohio State's Mai Shaito (16th place).

Olivia Weller  earned the Graham Jennings Award, given to a fencer that isn't in an official leadership role, but who steps up and serves as a leader on the team. She led a young epee squad with a 41-30 record overall and was the only member of the epee team to post a winning record at the Ivy League tournament (10-8). Weller finished 24th overall at the 2013 NCAA Northeast Regional.

The team's Greatest Academic Award went to McIntosh, Lucia Rafanelli, Kristen Holl and Jenny Zheng all of whom have a cumulative grade-point average of above 3.8.

The team's Most Improved Award went to Taylor Wong, who finished with a 36-30 record as a member of the epee squad.
