#62 Men's Tennis Continues Home Stand vs. Radford, Georgia State

1/31/2014 10:56:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The men's tennis team continues non-league play this weekend, playing host to Radford and Georgia State at Reis Tennis Center.

The Big Red maintained its No. 62 national ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association this week in the wake of a 4-1 victory last Sunday against George Washington. Sophomore Stefan Vinti and freshman Bernardo Casares Rosa occupied the top two spots in the singles lineup in their first dual matches for Cornell (1-1), but neither clash was completed with the outcome of the match already decided. After dropping the doubles point to start the day, the Big Red cleaned house in the other four singles positions to earn the win. Junior Alex Sidney won both a singles and doubles match for the Big Red.

Cornell starts this weekend with a 2 p.m. Friday match against Radford. The Highlanders have yet to play an official dual match this season, coming off a rare 8-13 record in 2013. Radford won five Big South Conference championships in the six years prior. Senior Nick Sayer is a former Big South Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. The only times the programs have met before came in a neutral-site meeting Jan. 30, 2011 in Charlottesville, Va. The Big Red emerged with the victory, 4-3.

Georgia State then visits Reis for the first time with an early wake-up call for an 8 a.m. match Sunday. The Panthers started their dual season ranked 62nd and followed up with a pair of home victories against Florida Atlantic and USC Upstate. The squad then headed west for the ITA Kickoff Classic and dropped a pair of matches to Wichita State and Santa Clara in Los Angeles. The Panthers start this weekend with a Friday match at Columbia.
