ITHACA, N.Y. —
Joel Lowry scored twice and added an assist as part of the White team's stretch of five consecutive goals en route to an 8-5 victory in the hockey programs' annual Red/White Game on Saturday night at Lynah Rink.
The intrasquad game featured two 30-minute halves. The men's and women's teams alternated pairs of shifts throughout. Power plays were awarded evenly at set times throughout the game, as were four-on-four situations. Any infractions that were detected by the officials resulted in penalty shots, which produced three goals.
Seven of the game's 13 goals were scored by the men's team, with Lowry proving to be the game's only three-point scorer.
Taylor Woods scored twice – once on a penalty shot and once in the shootout finale – and
Emily Fulton added a goal and an assist to pace the offense for the women's team.
The White team jumped out to an early two-goal lead on
Jess Brown's penalty-shot goal just 2:23 into the contest.
Reece Willcox then doubled the lead, finishing off a chance on the rush on what proved to be the first of
Christian Hilbrich's two assists on the night.
The Red team answered quickly.
Anna Zorn's goal on assists from
Brianne Jenner and
Caroline DeBruin got the squad on the board, then Woods tied the game 24 seconds later by slipping a backhanded shot past
Stefannie Moak on a penalty shot.
But White took over from there, starting with Lowry's power-play goal set up by
Joakim Ryan.
John Knisley beat
Ryan Coon with a shot through the legs on a penalty shot, then White extended its lead to 5-2 entering halftime on Lowry's unassisted tally a short time after he clanked a shot off the crossbar.
Jillian Saulnier scored the second half's first goal with a backhand on a sharp angle, then the White team's lead ballooned to five goals on
John McCarron's blast through traffic with 22:37 to play.
Patrick McCarron set up
Jeff Kubiak for a power-play goal to pull Red back to within 7-3, but
Emily Fulton's unassisted strike with 3:48 left gave White its five-goal cushion back.
The Red team scored the only two goals of the game-ending shootout, coming from Woods and
Jacob MacDonald.
