Men's Tennis Ready to Tangle With St. John's on Saturday

3/20/2014 1:47:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The men's tennis team is back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday, coming off an idle weekend to take on St. John's at Reis Tennis Center in a matchup of nationally ranked teams.

Cornell (9-4) is on a four-match winning streak and has climbed to 38th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings – its highest standing of the season to date. The Big Red had a very successful road trip in its last dual matches, edging nationally ranked Virginia Commonwealth, 4-3, before earning a 4-1 victory the next day at Old Dominion.

Sophomore Stefan Vinti has also cracked the national singles rankings for the first time this season, tabbed as 121st in the country. He is 6-1 in singles play from the top two positions in the lineup. Juniors Jason Luu and Quoc-Daniel Nguyen are just 1-5 in the spring season, but are ranked 72nd in the country thanks to their October run into USTA/ITA Northeast Regional final.

St. John's is 7-4 going into a Thursday match at home against Marist. The Red Storm defeated DePaul, 4-3, in its Big East opener on Jan. 31 at the National Tennis Center in New York. R.J. Del Nunzio competes at the No. 1 singles position and also pairs with Erick Reyes to form the 68th-ranked doubles team in the nation.

The Big Red is 13-1 all-time against the Red Storm, with the lone loss coming on April 28, 1996. Cornell won last season's clash in New York, 5-2, sweeping doubles. Sam Fleck, Quoc-Daniel Nguyen and Alex Sidney were the singles victors for the Big Red.
