Women's Tennis Prepares For Ivy Matches at Dartmouth, Harvard

4/2/2014 2:21:00 PM

The women's tennis team will look to get back on the winning track this weekend in a pair of Ivy League matches. The Big Red will take on Dartmouth at 2 p.m. Friday before visiting Harvard at 2 p.m. Saturday. The match against the Crimson will be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network.

Cornell (7-4, 0-1 Ivy League) had a five-match winning streak snapped last Saturday with a 6-1 loss at Columbia. Freshman Marika Cusick earned the Big Red's lone point with a win at No. 2 singles via injury forfeit. Prior to that, Cornell had pieced together consecutive victories in March against Fairleigh Dickinson, West Virginia, Akron, Binghamton and Army. Cusick leads the team with nine singles victories and is tied with freshman Alexandra D'Ascenzo and sophomore Dena Tanenbaum with seven doubles victories. D'Ascenzo and Tanenbaum are the 51st-ranked doubles team in the nation.

Dartmouth (4-6) has dropped four its last five, including last Friday's 4-3 loss to 27th-ranked Houston at home. The Big Green won once on a four-match road trip to California earlier this month, losing to San Jose State, Fresno State and Long Beach State before prevailing against Cal State Northridge. Katherine Yau and Taylor Ng typically compete at the top of the singles lineup and form the No. 1 doubles tandem.

The Big Red is 7-24 all-time against the Big Green, including a 4-3 victory in last year's Ivy League meeting at Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y. Cornell won the doubles point, then split the six singles matches. Among the victors for the Big Red was Tanenbaum at the No. 4 spot. The teams crossed paths earlier this season in the consolation bracket of the weather-shortened ECAC Indoor Championships in New York. The Big Green earned a 5-2 victory in that match, with the Big Red getting its points via senior Shannon Comolli's victory at No. 6 singles and a pair of doubles victories.

Harvard (8-4 coming into Saturday's match at Columbia), ranked 39th in the country by the ITA, is coming off a 4-3 victory over Houston last Sunday. Prior to that, the Crimson won one of three matches on a swing through California – defeating Cal State Northridge before suffering losses against San Diego State and Long Beach State. Spencer Liang is the team's primary competitor at No. 1 singles and pairs with incumbent No. 2 Monica Lin to form the 57th-ranked doubles team in the nation.

Harvard holds a 35-1 lead in the all-time series, with Cornell's lone victory coming on April 6, 2007 at Reis Tennis Center. The Crimson earned a 6-1 in each of the last two seasons.
