ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team has announced six newcomers will join the squad for the 2014-15 season.
Mike Stevens, who will return for his fifth season as the Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis, announced that Alyssa Boey, Angel Deng, Allegra Hanlon, Priyanka Shah, Madison Stevens and Lizzie Stewart will comprise the Class of 2018 additions to the Big Red. The group received votes for the Tennis Recruiting Network's top 25 classes in the spring rankings, released earlier this week.
The third-winningest coach in program history, Stevens will bring an extremely young squad to the table for the 2014-15 season. The six newcomers will be joining junior
Dena Tanenbaum and sophomores
Marika Cusick,
Alexandra D'Ascenzo and
Kristin Quill.
Class of 2018 Player Biographies Alyssa Boey5-foot-5 – Petaling Jaya, Malaysia (Damansara Jaya National HS)Boey helped Damansara Jaya National HS win the state and national team championships in 2010, 2011 and 2012, also winning a bronze medal at the Southeast Asian School Games in 2012. She was named the school's Highest Academic Achiever and Best Athlete in 2013. Boey also competed on the Malaysian National Tennis Team. She won an International Tennis Federation doubles title in 2013. She was also a runner-up in the Junior Fed Cup Pre-Qualifying Round in 2011 and won the team event and was a singles runner-up in the 2011 Malaysian Games.
Angel Deng5-foot-7 –Safety Harbor, Fla. (East Lake HS)Deng was a Florida state runner-up in both singles and doubles in 2014. She is a three-time Player of the Year, district champion and conference champion. Competing for Countryside HS as a freshman in 2011, Deng was named the Tampa Bay Times' Player of the Year after sweeping through the regular season with an undefeated record before losing in the state semifinals. Deng was listed as a four-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network and has been ranked as high as 80th nationally for recruits entering college for the 2014-15 season.
Allegra Hanlon5-foot-5 – Key Biscayne, Fla. (Ransom Everglades School)Hanlon joins the Big Red after winning a states title in both singles and doubles during her senior year at Ransom Everglades School. She also won two state team titles in her six years with the school. She was listed as a four-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network and has been ranked as high as 79th nationally in recruits for the 2014 season.
Priyanka Shah5-foot-5 – Somerset, N.J. (Lake Nona HS [Fla.])Shah helped Lake Nona HS to a second-place finish at the state championships in 2011. As a junior, she then became Florida District 2A Overall Singles Champion and Overall Doubles Runner-Up to earn Player Of the Year honors for the class. She received the All-Metro Player Award four times and was named to first team twice. Shah was a two-time team Most Valuable Player and served as a captain during her senior year. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Asian Association, where she was recognized for academic excellence. Shah was listed as a four-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network and was ranked 78th nationally for her class as of May 28, 2014.
Madison Stevens5-foot-6 – Mendham, N.J. (The Pingry School)Stevens was a two-time New Jersey state semifinalist and a three-time All-State Team selection at The Pingry School. She won the Somerset County title twice and was named the Somerset County Scholar-Athlete of the Year following her senior season in 2014. She helped lead Pingry to the Non-Public A State championship in 2012 and 2013. She was an AP Scholar with Distinction and a garnered Honor Roll recognition for all four years. Stevens was listed as a four-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network and ranked as high as 79th nationally and fourth in New Jersey for class entering the college ranks for the 2014-15 season.
Lizzie Stewart5-foot-5 – Oakton, Va. (Oakton HS)Stewart was a four-time Washington Post First Team All-Met selection, including a selection as the 2013 All-Met Player of the Year after she won a Virginia state title in both singles and doubles. She served as the team captain of Oakton High School as a senior, helping the team to a Virginia Northern Region championship in 2013, and Concorde District titles in both 2013 and 2014. Stewart earned all-district first-team honors in both of those seasons. Stewart was listed as a four-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network, and was ranked as high as 50th nationally in 2013 for her graduating class and as high as first among recruits from Virginia.
