Women’s Hockey Plays To Draw With Union

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. --- Freshman Pippy Gerace scored her first career goal for Cornell women's hockey, sparking the Big Red's rally from a two-goal deficit to tie Union, 2-2, Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink.
Early in the first period, senior Anna Zorn's shot nearly crossed the goal line, and the play was reviewed by the officials, who ruled no goal. The Dutchwomen then got the early lead, with Kelli Mackey's unassisted goal opening the scoring 13:07 into the first period. Jessica Kaminsky added a second tally just 1 minute, 10 seconds later to give Union the 2-0 advantage.

Cornell's offense came alive in the second period, firing 17 shots on goal in the frame. The all-freshman line of Gerace, Christian Higham and Lenka Serdar ignited the Big Red's comeback. Gerace's goal, a poke in of her own rebound, came at 8:31 into the period and was a collective effort from the whole line, with all three digging for the loose puck in front of the net. That line posted a combined nine shots on the night, with Serdar going 7-for-9 at the faceoff dot.

The Big Red evened the score at two at 14:57. Junior Brianna Veerman got the puck behind the net and fed it to senior Taylor Woods in the corner. Woods threw the puck in front, and junior Hanna Bunton redirected it in for her second goal of the season.

Cornell once again outshot the Dutchwomen in the third, 12-5, but the score remained, sending the Big Red to overtime for the second straight day. Cornell controlled play in the extra frame, but couldn't find the back of net.

The Big Red ended the day with a dramatic 41-15 advantage in shots, with Union registering just five shots in all three regulation periods. Woods had the game-high for shots for the second consecutive game, rattling off seven tries on goal, including a well-placed shot off a feed from Bunton that had to be gloved down by Dutchwomen goaltender Melissa Black. Sophomore defenseman Sydnee Saracco also had a number of quality chances, both from the point and down low, often creating her own opportunities. Senior Stefannie Moak, who took over in net after Union's second goal, made 12 saves.

The Big Red hits the road next weekend, travelling to ECAC Hockey opponents Princeton and No. 5/5 Quinnipiac. Faceoff at Princeton is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6. The Big Red will take the ice at Quinnipiac at 4 p.m. the next afternoon.
