Failed Pickoff Dooms Baseball in 2-1 Loss at Gardner-Webb

Box Score (PDF)

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Senior Dan Morris drove in sophomore Jamie Smith in the top of the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie, but the baseball team couldn't hold on to the lead before suffering a 2-1 loss Sunday at Gardner-Webb. The loss capped off a three-game sweep for Gardner-Webb (6-1) in which the host squad won by one run in each game.

Cornell (0-3) surrendered the winning run in the ninth inning, when the Runnin' Bulldogs' Taylor Fisher appeared to be picked off with nobody out. Fisher broke for second as a pickoff throw went to first, but sailed high and wide. The ball rattled around in a portion of foul territory near the bullpen fence, allowing Fisher to come all the way around and score.

The Big Red's lone run of the game was also unearned, with Smith leading off the eighth by reaching on the GWU shortstop's fielding error. Senior Matt Hall drew a one-out walk and sophomore Frankie Padulo hit a two-out single to left, loading the bases. Morris followed by stroking a single up the middle to drive home the game's first run.

But Gardner-Webb responded with the tying run in the bottom half of the frame. A leadoff single was followed by a stolen base, then a one-out single through the left side to knot the score at 1. Junior Matt Horton was summoned from the bullpen, and he recorded the final two outs of the inning to bookend an intentional walk.

Senior Kellen Urbon pitched five scoreless innings in his first start of the season. He yielded four hits and one walk while stranding runners at third base in the fourth and fifth innings. The final out in both frames came on called third strikes, accounting for half of Urbon's four strikeouts.

Cornell returns to action next weekend for a three-game series at George Mason, with one game apiece on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
