Women’s Lacrosse Wraps-Up Spring Break Trip at #13/9 Stanford

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell women's lacrosse will look to sweep its two-game West Coast swing when it heads to Palo Alto to take on nationally-ranked Stanford on Tuesday evening.

Big Red Headlines
Cornell put on a prolific offensive display on  Sunday afternoon, blasting California 23-6 at Memorial Stadium in the first game of a two-game West Coast swing. The 23 goals marked the most that a Cornell team has ever scored in a single-game; breaking the previous program record of 22 goal, which the team had reached three times including once earlier this season. Senior co-captain Lindsay Toppe had a monster game, equaling a career-high with seven goals. Sophomore Amie Dickson also posted a career-game with eight points, which included a hat-trick and five assists. Ten players tallied at least one goal, while 13 players scored at least one point in the contest. Senior Sarah Hefner also broke the program record for career draw controls. Other highlights were Meredith Baker and Christie Powell both netting their first collegiate goals in the lopsided victory, with Baker's going for the program record breaking final tally.
 
Cardinal Headlines
Stanford has gotten off to an extremely strong start to the season, entering play on Tuesday evening with a 5-1 record. The team has already posted wins over two ranked teams in Notre Dame and Ohio State, while its lone loss was by two goals this past week at ranked Penn State. The Cardinal checks at No. 9 in the InsideLacrosse Media Poll, while it is No. 13 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll this week. In the team's most recent matchup it downed Harvard 15-10 in Cambridge, Mass. Stanford ran away with the game with 10 goals after halftime, after being tied at the break. Rachel Ozer netted a hat-trick, while Hannah Farr, Mackenzie Tesei and Lucy Dikeou each tallied a pair for the Cardinal. Kelsey Murray leads the team with 24 points, nine of which coming on assists, while Dikeou paces the squad with 17 goals.
 
The Series Against Stanford...
Cornell leads the series with the Cardinal with a 6-3 overall record. Cornell is 2-1 all-time against Stanford in Palo Alto. The Cardinal has taken three of the last four matchups in the series.
 
Last Season's Matchup...
Stanford felled the Big Red 17-9 last season at Schoellkopf Field. The Cardinal came into the matchup ranked #11/13 in the two major polls and showed why in an impressive opening half. Stanford tallied 11 times in the opening 30 minutes to take an eight goal lead to the break. Lindsay Toppe and Rachel Moody both recorded hat tricks for the Big Red in the losing effort.
 
Historic Offensive Output
Cornell recorded 22 goals earlier in the season against Binghamton to equal the program's all-time record for single-game scoring. The Big Red did one better on Sunday against Cal, scoring 23 goals in break the program record, which it had equaled three times previously. The team also equaled the 2012 Big Red as the only two teams in program history to score two 20+ goal games in a single season. Overall, there have been seven 20+ goal games in the program's 44 year history: March 20, 2012 at Jacksonville (22-13), March 13, 2012 vs. Canisius (21-7), May 1, 1994 vs. Rutgers (22-11) and a pair of 20-6 victories over Stanford in 1999 and the other in 2002.
 
League Leaders
Cornell ranks among the Ivy League's best in sevaral categories this year. The squad leads the League in scoring and draw controls. The team also ranks among the top 30 program's in NCAA Division I in scoring defense, although it trails a pair of other League teams. The Big Red's possession dominance has been impressive early this season as Cornell has jumped out to early leads.
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Senior Lindsay Toppe became the third Cornell player to be recognized in the Ivy League weekly awards when she was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. The Big Red's top attacker had a monster game in Cornell's record breaking 23-6 victory over California on Sunday afternoon. She equaled a career-high with seven goals, as all seven of her attempted shots found the back of the net. She went a perfect 2-for-2 in free positions, while she equaled a career-high with the seven tallies.
 
Strong on the Draw
Cornell has been absolutely relentless on the draw this season. The squad currently ranks first in the Ivy League with 14.11 draw controls per game, tied for the 13th best mark in NCAA Division I. While the Big Red expected to be good in this area due to the return of draw control specialist Sarah Hefner, Amie Dickson and Maddie Kiep have been pleasant surprises. Dickson leads the squad with 32 draws, while Kiep has added 23 on the year. Dickson is tied for third in the League, while Kiep is tied for seventh among Ivy League players. Hefner is 10th in the League with 20. She broke the program record for draws in the game against Cal.
 
Dynamic Dickson
Sophomore Amie Dickson has really flourished in the early part of the 2015 campaign. She has already quadrupled last season's total point output of 10, pumping in a career high eight points in the big win over California. She had another big game at No. 5 Syracuse, finishing with a team-high five points on one goal and four assists. Dickson now sits at 21 goals and 21 assists on the year, after the three goal and five assist performance against Cal. She also has made significant contributions throughout the stat sheet, proving to be an excellent two-way player in the midfield. Dickson currently leads the Ivy League in points (42) and assists, while she is seventh in goals. She is also tied for third in the League with 32 draw controls.
 
Toppe Marks
Lindsay Toppe has been hot as wildfire in recent matchups, recording 13 points over her last two games despite facing constant rotating double-teams from opposing defensive units. She currently leads the team in goals with 28 on the season, while she is second on the team in scoring with 34 points. Her presence has opened up the offensive zone for her teammates, as three other players have collected 20+ points already this season. Toppe continues to lead the Ivy League with 65 shots, while she is second for goals and tied for second in points.
 
Up Next
Cornell will return from its West Coast swing, but will stay on the road this coming weekend when it takes on Ivy League opponent Dartmouth on Saturday, April 4. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Hanover with the Big Red looking to go 4-0 in League play.
