ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior
Brian McAfee was named to the All-Ivy League First Team in baseball, and senior
Spencer Scorza has earned a spot on the All-Ivy Second Team. Senior
Kevin Tatum and sophomore
Tommy Wagner were also given All-Ivy Honorable Mention, as released Thursday afternoon by the league. This marks the ninth consecutive season in which Cornell has at least three players earning Ivy postseason honors.
McAfee had an incredible bounceback season this year after missing nearly all of 2014 with an injury. He was the Big Red's ace, starting nine games and leading the team with a 5-2 record, 1.77 earned-run average, four complete games, two shutout and 38 strikeouts. Through 56 innings of work, he issued just six walks to cement himself as the program's all-time leader in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (1.14). As of Thursday, he ranked in the top 20 nationally in four different categories — 10th in walks allowed per nine innings (0.96), 13th in WHIP (0.88), 19th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.33) and 20th in complete games (four). Opponents hit a paltry .210 against him this season.
Two of his starts earned him Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors. The first came after he held Virginia — then undefeated and the nation's No. 1 team — scoreless over seven innings on March 1. The Cavaliers never advanced a runner past second base, with McAfee issuing no walks while striking out seven. The second Pitcher of the Week honor came after a two-hit shutout of Rolfe Division champion Dartmouth on April 4. McAfee was later named to the Academic All-District team, and he is on the ballot for the national team. This is his second career All-Ivy honor, after he was placed on the Second Team after a successful freshman season in 2012. McAfee gives the Big Red 12 first-teamers over the last nine years, and he is the program's second starting pitcher to be named to the first team since 2004 (
Connor Kaufmann was the other in 2012).
In his second season with the Big Red, Scorza earned his first career All-Ivy honor as a designated hitter. He posted a .315 average while starting all 20 league games, leading the squad with eight doubles and tying for the team lead in runs (15) and hits (23). This is the third straight season a Big Red DH has earned All-Ivy honors, following senior
Ryan Karl in 2014 and Tatum in 2013.
Tatum earned honorable mention for a third time, with the unique distinction of appearing at a different position each time — first at the utility position, next at DH, then this year as the Big Red's regular third baseman. He hit .310 in Ivy games, including a home run at Harvard. He drew 10 walks next to just 12 strikeouts.
Wagner earned his first All-Ivy honor as the Big Red's everyday second baseman and leading hitter. He batted .348 in 20 Ivy games, leading the team with 15 RBIs. He also had one of the team's two triples in league play, and he added a pair of stolen bases.
