NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The men's and women's squash teams will return to the Constitution State for the second time this month when it competes in the Yale Round Robin at Brady Squash Center. Both teams take on Drexel at 10 a.m. Saturday and George Washington at 9 a.m. Sunday.
In between the matches featuring both teams, the Big Red women's team (4-3) will battle rival Stanford (7-2) at 3 p.m. Saturday. Though not in the same league, Cornell and Stanford have engaged in some of the Big Red's biggest matches over recent seasons as they sit next to each other in the College Squash Association's national rankings. Specifically, Cornell was No. 6 and Stanford was No. 7 from 2012 until late last season. The Cardinal slipped out of the top eight and ended up winning the 'B' Division Kurtz Cup at season's end, maintaining a No. 9 ranking coming into this season. Stanford then secured one of the biggest upsets of the early season when it defeated second-ranked Trinity, 5-4, on Nov. 22. That vaulted the Cardinal past the Big Red to No. 5 in the nation and bumped the Big Red down to No. 7 for the first time in several years. Cornell's 5-4 loss to Columbia two weeks ago has further slid the Big Red to No. 8 — the final position to earn a berth in the season-ending 'A' Division Howe Cup. Cornell is 11-3 all-time against Stanford, including victories in each of the last six clashes.
Besides an opportunity to move up against the Cardinal, the Cornell women's team will also be staving off two programs looking to move up. Drexel (6-2) is up to ninth after defeating previous No. 9 Dartmouth two weeks ago, and George Washington (5-4) is 13th. The Big Red has never lost to either program in a combined five all-time meetings, with the only points its conceding coming in last year's 7-2 over Drexel. Senior
Reut Odinak, sophomore
Emma Uible and freshman
Nghi Nguyen are tied for the team lead with five victories apiece so far, and junior
Sydney Francis is 4-1.
The Cornell men's team (3-3) has been strongest in the early going from the bottom third of the order, accumulating a 14-7 record from positions 7-9.
Ben Francis is a team-best 5-2 from primarily those spots, and junior
Augie Jones (3-1) and sophomore
Andrew Stone (2-1) also have winning records in the early going. The Big Red is 3-0 all-time against both Drexel and George Washington, which included both its victories at the 'B' Division Hoehn Cup last year. Drexel (7-4) has since jumped ahead of the 12th-ranked Big Red to ninth in the nation, thanks to victories in the fall over then-No. 9 Franklin & Marshall and then-No. 8 Princeton. GW (9-3) holds down the No. 13 spot just beneath the Big Red. The Colonials open the weekend with matches against Yale on Friday and Brown on Saturday.
