Big Red Wins Akron Zippy Invitational Behind Pool, Meet Record Swims

AKRON, Ohio -- For the sixth straight season, the Cornell men's swimming and diving team won a pre-finals meet, taking first at the Akron Zippy Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Ocasek Natatorium. The Big Red set numerous meet and pool records, along with a school record that also backed as an Ivy record.

Cornell closed the three-day meet with 1,950 points to outdistance second place Oakland (1,770 points).

Brandon Sweezer and Ian Russiello took second and third, respectively, in the 1650 free in 15:42.15 and 15:43.32 (No. 7 all-time at Cornell). Freshman Matt Daniel (sixth, 15:57.18) also scored in the marathon event.

Dylan Curtis took second in the 200 back (1:47.18, No. 6 all-time at Cornell), with Braedon Wong (11th, 1:53.93) also scoring.

The Big Red took 2-3-4 in the 100 free, with Luke Reisch leading the way with a time of 44.67. Jack Brenneman (44.84) and Jack Mahoney (44.58) right behind him. Rob Lincoln (12th, 46.10) and Calvin Hulse (13th, 46.26) advanced to the B final and Koppi Kolyvek (20th, 46.60) and Brandon Sweezer (47.07) each scored in the C final.

Alex Evdokimov set a pool and meet record in the 200 breast with a winning time of 1:54.31. He was joined in the A final by fourth-place finisher Ryan Brown (2:00.87, No. 5 all-time at Cornell) and Liam Sosinsky (2:02.12) in sixth. 

Another pool and meet record went down in the 200 butterfly, as Vincent Declercq touched in 1:47.21, an NCAA B cut time. Russiello placed third (1:49.89) and Marc Morizono (1:52.07) was fifth, while Kolyvek (13th, 1:55.72) and Jordan Berger (14th, 1:56.35) scored in the B final, adding valuable points to Cornell's team total.

Cornell went out with a bang, closing the meet with a pool and meet record time in the 400 free relay, with Mahoney, Brenneman, Evdokimov and Reisch taking home the title in 2:57.78 (No. 3 all-time at Cornell). The B team of Curtis, Declercq, Hulse and Lincoln was fourth in 3:01.57 (No. 9 all-time at Cornell).

At the Ithaca Bomber Invitational, Jeremiah Kim took seventh in the 100 IM (55.96), while David Zurmuhl was the runner-up in the 100 free (45.90), ahead of teammate Spencer Kendall in sixth (47.50). Ryan Graff was 11th in the event with a 48.14 and Noah Burgett took 14th (48.91).

Graff captured a spot on the podium in the 200 breast in 2:09.85, with Kim taking 14th (2:15.01). Cornell's 400 free relay captured fourth in 3:10.62 with Graff, Kendal, Burgett and Zurmuhl swimming legs.
AKRON, Ohio -- The Cornell men's swimming team set one Ivy League, one school, three pool and three meet records on day two of the Akron Zippy Invitational on Saturday evening at Ocasek Natatorium. The Big Red remained atop the team standings ahead of Oakland and Buffalo with its 1402.5 points, a 156.5 point lead entering the final day of competition.

Alex Evdokimov broke the Ivy League record and posted a strong NCAA B time with his pool and meet record 52.41 in the finals to easily win the 100 breast. Liam Sosinsky (seventh, 55.83, No. 10 all-time at Cornell) and Ryan Brown (eighth, 55.51, No. 7 all-time at Cornell) also made the A final in the event, while Jordan Berger (15th, 57.29) and Calvin Hulse (19th, 58.76) were scorers.

The men opened Saturday the same way it opened Friday - with a pool and meet record relay swim. This time, it was the team of Dylan Curtis, Evdokimov, Luke Reisch and Jack Brenneman swimming the winning 200 medley in a school-record 1:26.44. The B team of Rob Lincoln, Liam Sosinsky, Jack Mahoney and Calvin Hulse was sixth in 1:31.14.

Ian Russiello took home the title in the 400 IM(3:55.29, No. 2 all-time at Cornell) with Ryan Brown (4:01.25) taking sixth. Both Matt Daniel (ninth, 4:02.18) and Sosinsky (10th, 4:06.25) both finished top 10.

Cornell went 3-4-5-6 in the 100 butterfly led by Brenneman's NCAA B cut time (48:25). Vincent Declercq (48.40, No. 6 at Cornell), Reisch (48.46) and Mahoney (48.89) weren't far behind, while Dylan Curtis also made the A final in 49:32 to place eighth. Also scoring in the event was Braedon Wong in 12th (49.87).

Koppi Kolyvek continued the Big Red's hot streak with a win in the 200 free in a solid 1:38.84 (No. 3 all-time at Cornell), edging out a pair of swimmers, including teammate Marc Morizono in third (1:40.22). Brandon Sweezer was 16th (1:41.91).

Yet another meet and pool record with an accompanying NCAA B time was put forth by Curtis, whose 47.86 time in the prelims (No. 2 all-time at Cornell) and 48.15 in the finals led him to the top of the podium in the 100 back. Cornell also placed third (Reisch, 49.32), sixth (Lincoln, 50.53), seventh (Wong, 50.97) and ninth (Mahoney, 49.94, No. 9 all-time at Cornell). 

Noah Sterling was sixth in the 1-meter dive competition, scoring a 264.45 to add 24 team points.

Cornell had a pair of 800 free relay teams and touched third and fourth in easily season-best times. Curtis, Kolyvek, Sweezer and Morizono touched in 6:45.03, while Daniel, Declercq, Russiello and Lincoln weren't far behind in 6:45.77.

The 200 free relay of Jeremiah Kim, Noah Burgett, Spencer Kendall and Ryan Graff placed fifth in 1:28.66 to start the day, the first of a number of scoring events for the Big Red. 

Kendall claimed the title in the 200 free in 1:40.72, while Burgett took first in the 200 butterfly (1:55.01). Burgett also finished seventh in the 100 fly (52.45), while David
Zurmuhl finished on the podium with a third-place finish in the 100 back (52.46). Graff was the runner-up in the 100 breast (58.36), while Kim was two spots behind in fourth in 59.43. AKRON, Ohio -- Cornell set three Ocasek Natatorium records and three Zippy Invitational meet records after a successful first day in the pool on Friday. The Big Red is atop the team standings with 601.5 points.

The Big Red opened the meet with a meet and pool record in the 200 free relay, as Luke Reisch, Jack Brenneman, Alex Evdokimov and Jack Mahoney put down a blazing time of 1:19.94, just .04 ahead of second place Bloomsburg and .03 off the school record. The B team of Calvin Hulse, Rob Lincoln, Brandon Sweezer and Vincent Declercq was fifth in 1:23.52.

Koppi Kolyvek earned a spot on the podium in the 500 free with a 4:29.87 (good for seventh all-time at Cornell), while rookie Matt Daniel placed one spot behind (4:30.46 - ninth-best for the Big Red) to lead five Big Red swimmers in the A final. Ian Russiello was sixth (4:32.41), Marc Morizono placed seventh (4:33.59) and Brandon Sweezer touched eighth (4:32.62). Also scoring in the event was Ryan Brown (14th, 4:39.34).

Declercq was the Big Red's top finisher in the 200 IM, finishing fourth in 1:49.51, the fifth-fastest time in school history. Jordan Berger wasn't far behind in 12th (1:54.12), while Liam Sosinsky (14th, 1:54.56) and Braedon Wong (21st, 1:56.10) also scored in the event.

The Big Red had three swimmers make the A final in the 50 free, with Jack Brenneman hitting third with a best time of 20.03, the fastest time in the prelims for a meet and pool record. Like Reisch (20.18, No. 5 all-time at Cornell) also hit the NCAA B standard, while Mahoney placed seventh (20:30). To continue Cornell's dominant effort, Evdokimov (10th, 20.52), Dylan Curtis (11th, 20.68) and Calvin Hulse (12th, 20.76) all finished in the top 12, and Rob Lincoln (20.82) won the C final to place 17th.

Nick Kilen (seventh, 253.75) was Cornell's top scorer in the 3-meter platform to add another 23 points to the team total.

Cornell crushed the meet and pool record in the 400 medley relay to close the night, as Curtis, Evdokimov, Reisch and Brenneman cruised home with a time of 3:12.66, more than a second and a half faster than the competition. It was the second-fastest time in Cornell history. The B team swam the course in 3:20.19, good for seventh place, No. 10 all-time for the Big Red.

The Big Red brought just four swimmers and a diver to the Ithaca Bomber Invite on day one of the meet, with sophomores Spencer Kendall, Jeremiah Kim and Noah Burgett teaming with rookie Ryan Graff to finish sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:37.90).

Kendall won the 500 free in 4:36.40, more than five seconds faster than the runner-up. Burgett was sixth (4:46.63). Kendall had another top 10 finish in the 50 free in 21.98, good for 10th. Graff made the podium in the event with a third place effort in 21.35. Kim (18th, 2:00.99) scored in the 200 IM, as did junior Kyle Rooney (fourth, 410.45) in the 1-meter diving competition.
