ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team continues a home-heavy stretch with a pair of non-league matches this weekend at Reis Tennis Center. The Big Red welcomes NJIT to town at 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by a visit from 48th-ranked Boston College at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Cornell improved to 4-3 last weekend after home victories against Connecticut (4-3 on Friday) and Albany (5-2 on Sunday). Junior
Alexandra D'Ascenzo won both of her matches in No. 2 singles last weekend, and classmate
Marika Cusick continues to hold down the No. 1 position and is ranked 117th nationally. Cusick and D'Ascenzo are also 4-0 since being paired together for No. 1 doubles. Sophomore
Lizzie Stewart has a team-high four victories in singles, having recently jumped to the No. 3 position.
NJIT sits at 3-2 after last Sunday's 5-2 loss to Fordham. The Highlanders won their three matches prior to that, topping LIU Brooklyn, Marist and Fairfield. The squad is a combined 11-4 from the bottom half of the singles order, including Nataljia Tasovac's 5-0 mark from the No. 6 spot. Alba Rosas Garcia has won four in row from the No. 4 position. The Big Red has won its only two previous meetings against NJIT, which came in 2011 at the ECAC Indoor Championships and 2013 at Cornell.
The Eagles are 4-3 entering their Atlantic Coast Conference opener Saturday at Syracuse. They are 1-2 against Ivy League opponents to date, including a 4-3 loss to Dartmouth on Feb. 13 and a 5-2 setback to Brown on Feb. 16. Lexi Borr is ranked 108th in singles and is 2-2 from the No. 1 position. Asiya Dair is ranked 48th and 4-0 from the No. 2 spot. This will be BC's first visit to Reis since 2004. The Eagles have won the last four meetings between the programs and the Big Red kicked off the all-time series with a 4-3 victory on April 16, 1994.
