NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The men's squash team opened play at the Hoehn Cup on Friday with a dominating 9-0 sweep of Middlebury at Brady Squash Center. Six of the nine matches were decided in the minimum three sets, helping Cornell (8-8) roll into Saturday's semifinals of the College Squash Association's 'B' Division national championship.
Cornell swept the day's first five matches to clinch before freshman
Andy Muran's come-from-behind marathon match at the No. 5 position. Competing at the No. 9 spot, freshman
Ben Francis surrendered the fewest points of all Big Red competitors.
Up next for Cornell is a match against No. 11 George Washington at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The Colonials won their first round match on Friday against No. 14 Navy, improving to 13-6 on the season. GW defeated the Big Red, 5-4, when they met in the regular season on Jan. 31 — a match also contested at Yale.
Cornell is attempting to win the program's fourth Hoehn Cup, which features the nation's ninth- through 16th-ranked teams. The Big Red finished third in the Hoehn Cup last season, having last won it in 2007.
In the Hoehn Cup's other quarterfinals, No. 9 Drexel swept No. 16 Brown, 9-0, and No. 13 Princeton topped No. 12 Franklin & Marshall, 6-3. All four placement matches will start at 9 or 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
