Unpredictable spring weather failed to dampen the spirit in Barton Hall on Saturday as Cornell played host to the Indoor Cabin Fever Invitational, a competition greatly enhanced by the participation of the University of Birmingham, who are making their quadrennial trip to the United States this month, a tradition that began for them in the 1960s. The British visitors have been on campus staying with the Cornell team since Wednesday and they added great spirit and competitiveness to the meet, which featured an abbreviated schedule of events once the meet was moved inside.
Cornell produced 13 wins between the men and women and had 35 top three event finishes.
The women were led by a pair of seniors in the jumps.
Stephanie Izard took the high jump, clearing 5-7 while
Hillary Holmes won the triple jump with a mark of 39-0 1/2. Holmes also placed second in the long jump at 17-11, behind sophomore
Claudia Dabrowski's first place 18-3 1/4. Freshman
Leena Morris was also an event winner, taking the shot put at 43-9 3/4, while sophomore
Taylor Drayton was second at 43-3. In the vault, senior co-captain
Alexis Bartholomew was second at 11-9 3/4. On the track, senior
Kristen Niedrach (1:34.87) and sophomore
Shannon Hugard (1:34.89) went 1-2 in the 600 while junior
Libby Nolan pulled away from the field to win the 800 in 2:15.03. Sophomore
Jessica Elliott set a big PR to place first in the 3000 at 10:10.21. Freshman
Mary Barger was second in the 1500 at 4:48.90 and classmate
Briar Brumley also took second, running 6:45.85 in a brand-new event, the indoor 2000 steeplechase. Senior
Rochelle Forbes (26.19) and freshman
Cassidy Jenkins (27.20) were second and third in the 200. The Big Red also had a pair of second place finishes in the 4X200 (1:48.14) and distance medley (12:41.40) relays.
