Johnson Stops Seven In 1-0 Loss To Penn

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior goalie Kelly Johnson continued her run of outstanding play, making seven saves, but a perfectly executed penalty corner by Penn handed the Quaker field hockey team a 1-0 win this afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field.

Over the past three games, Johnson has saved .905 percent of the shots she's faced to go along with a 0.91 goals-against average and 6.33 saves per contest.

"Obviously I wasn't happy with our performance," said head coach Donna Hornibrook. "I didn't think our composure was very good. Give full credit to Penn. I thought they did a good job, I thought they played hard. It was a tight game but I just don't feel like we got into a flow. So we're not satisfied with our own performance."

Penn (5-1, 1-0 Ivy) held the edge in shots, 17-12, shots on goal, 8-7, and penalty corners, 8-3. Both Johnson and her Quaker counterpart, Liz Mata, made seven saves apiece.

The visitors took an early lead, scoring just 8:58 into the contest on a penalty corner when Alexa Hoover slipped the ball back to the inserter, Rachel Huang on the near post, and she banged it home.

Penn had several more chances late in the stanza, but Johnson was up to the task, finishing the half with five saves.

Cornell turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, including a pair of great chances by Krysten Mayers, but Mata was solid in preserving the shutout.

The Big Red is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 25, when it plays host to Vermont on Dodson Field.
