RICHMOND, Va. — Junior
Justin Lewis worked seven strong innings, then the baseball team scratched out three runs over the final two innings to walk off with a 3-2 victory against Campbell during the Spider Invitational on Saturday at Pitt Field. Senior
Frankie Padulo drove in the winning run with by drawing a walk with a full count and the bases loaded.
Lewis followed up a rough start last weekend with the Big Red's longest outing from a starter so far this season. He yielded just three hits through seven, but two Big Red errors in the first inning allowed the Camels to take an early 1-0 lead.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth, junior
Pierre Le Dorze led off with a single. Padulo drew a one-out walk to push Le Dorze to second, then the latter scored on a single up the middle by freshman Kaleb Lepper.
Campbell cut a runner on with a single in the ninth, but he was eliminated by a pickoff from senior reliever
Scott Soltis. That put him in position to be the winning pitcher after the Big Red's rally in the bottom of the ninth.
Junior
Trey Baur led off with a single to center, then was lifted for freshman pinch runner Matt Collins. He would then score on junior
Dale Wickham's double down the line in left, tying the game at 2. Senior
Cole Rutherford was intentionally walked and pinch-hitting junior
Ellis Bitar was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Padulo then drew the RBI walk to plate Wickham and improve Cornell's record to 5-3.
The Big Red will wrap up play at the three-day event at 10 a.m. Sunday against Michigan State.
