ITHACA, N.Y. -- Colgate had two-run rallies in their final at bat in both ends of a doubleheader to claim a win and a tie against Cornell on Tuesday afternoon at Niemand-Robison Field. The Raiders claimed a 7-6 triumph in game one, then salvaged a 4-4 tie in the second game after it was called after six innings due to darkness. Cornell fell to 9-21-1, while Colgate improved to 10-22-1.
Game One
Cornell rallied from a 5-3 deficit after five to take a 6-5 lead, only to see that evaporate in the seventh as the Raiders earned a 7-6 triumph. Cornell had 13 hits in the contest, including a 4-for-5 game from
Jessica Bigbie. Sarah Murray was also 3-for-5, while Bridgette Rooney was 2-for-4 with a double and her eighth home run of the season in the loss.
Megan Murray drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth with a hard hit fielder's choice, but Colgate responded with three hits in the seventh, including a Madison Aston run-scoring single that proved to be the game winner. Cornell left the bases loaded in the seventh.
Colgate's 3-4-5 spot in the order had two hits apiece and Brittany Bendel picked up her third win of the year by shutting down Cornell over the final 1.2 innings despite allowing four baserunners.
Game Two
Colgate's Holly Geranen hit a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 4-4, then Jessica Hay retired the Big Red in the bottom of the inning before both coaches agreed that the conditions were getting too dark. After a short meeting with the umpiring crew, the game was called a tie, Cornell's first since 2011 (1-1 tie at George Washington).
Cornell led 4-0 after four innings thanks to two-run frames in the third and fourth.
Madeline Avery had a two-run single to make it 2-0, and an inning later
Ivey Wagner hit a ground-rule double over the leftfield wall to extend the lead to 4-0. Colgate chipped away, scoring twice in the fifth before Geranen's homer in the sixth evened the score.
Both Wagner and
Megan Murray had a pair of hits as Cornell had 10 in the loss. Lisa Nelson had a strong outing in the circle, scattering five hits over six innings and striking out four in the no-decision.
Geranen, who entered the day hitting .400, was 3-for-6 on the afternoon.
