ITHACA, N.Y. --
Olivia Lam hit a walk-off ground-rule double in game two as Cornell salvaged a doubleheader split with Brown, winning the nightcap 4-3 in eight innings after falling in game one, 5-4. The Big Red moved to 6-9 (1-3 Ivy), while the Bears are 9-16 (1-3 Ivy).
The Big Red got solid pitching efforts in both contests, but it was a timely offense in game two that allowed Cornell to scratch out a win. Cornell scored two with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, then scored twice more in the eighth after allowing the Bears back ahead in the top of the inning.
Game One
The Bears used a three-run sixth inning in game one, then held off a seventh-inning rally to take the opener by a single run. Katie Orona stranded eight Big Red runners and went the distance, allowing eight hits and just three earned runs for the Bears and both Raquel Blanchard and Cat Seitz homered in the win.
Lisa Nelson started in the circle for the Big Red, going 5.2 innings and allowing just two earned runs to take the hard-luck loss. She struck out six and walked just one. Classmate Cora Geunes allowed just a hit batter in the final 1.1 innings to hold Brown at bay.
Cornell threatened in the seventh after entering down 5-3. Freshman Bridgette Rooney homered with two outs, followed by
Madeline Avery's second double of the game to put the tying run in scoring position.
Tori Togashi flew out to end the game, allowing Brown to capture its first Ivy win of the year.
Rooney was 2-for-4 with a triple, home run and two RBI, while Avery had a pair of doubles and scored a run.
Jessica Bigbie also had a pair of hits in the loss.
Game Two
Cornell twice rallied late, picking up its first Ivy victory of the season when
Olivia Lam's gapper to right-center leaped the fence for the walk-off winner. Lam was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles for a Big Red team that had six hits in its final two at bats after just three in the first six frames.
Lam ended up the hero, but wouldn't have been in that position if it hadn't been for big hits the previous inning by
Jessica Bigbie and Sarah Murray. Bigbie's RBI triple to deep center scored Lam, who doubled two batters earlier. The two-out magic continued when Sarah Murray singled to right off a diving catch attempt, allowing Bigbie to knot the score at 2-2.
Brown regained the lead in the top of the inning with Christina Andrews' second home run of the contest, but Cornell answered again. A little chopper in front of the plate put
Madeline Avery on, followed by a single up the middle by
Tori Togashi.
Rebecca Kubena drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases, setting up Lam's smash in the gap.
The Big Red returns to action when it visits Marist tomorrow at 2 p.m. The game will be played a day earlier than scheduled due to forecasted rain in Poughkeepsie on Tuesday.
