HANOVER, N.H. – After splitting a pair of thrilling sets that went to extra points, the Dartmouth volleyball team took advantage of Big Red miscues to earn a 3-1 victory this evening at Leede Arena. Cornell won the first set, 27-25, but the Big Green came back to win three in a row, 29-27, 25-15, 25-17.
The Big Red was led by
Jenna Phelps and
Emily Wemhoff's 11 and 10 kills, respectively. With her 10 kill performance, Wemhoff moves into 10th place in Cornell history with 737 career kills, passing Shelley Zierhut (730; 1989, 1991-93). Phelps was dominant, hitting .409 for the game (11-2-22) and adding four service aces and two blocks.
Kara Rogers also had a solid night, hitting .267 (7-3-15) with four block assists, while
Jada Stackhouse added five block assists to the cause.
Freshman setter
Zoe Chamness had 24 assists and senior
Chelsea Sincox finished with 19. Sophomore defensive specialist
Lily Barber had a team-high nine digs.
Dartmouth (6-6, 2-1) didn't have a single player reach double-digit kills, as Sara Lindquist's nine were a team-high, but the Big Green hit .231 as a team and used solid blocks and back row defense to earn the victory. Defensively, Tori Dozier and Carly Tower each registered five block assists to contribute to Dartmouth's 11 total team blocks. Dozier also posted a match-high 14 digs, while Olympia Nagel-Caland finished with 10.
The Big Red got out to a strong start in the first set behind the strength of Phelps five kills and Stackhouse's four blocks helping to hold Dartmouth to a -.069 hitting percentage (8-10-29). Cornell won the first set, 27-25, and were up big late in the second set (18-12), but the Big Green slowly chipped away and eventually knotted the set at 21-21. From there the teams essentially traded points before a kill from Elise Petite, followed by a tandem block from Tower and Nagel-Caland gave the home team the 29-27 victory.
Errors doomed the Big Red in the third and fourth set, as the team posted just 22 kills with 16 errors on 69 attempts for a .087 hitting percentage.
Cornell (5-7, 1-2 Ivy) remains on the road next weekend, traveling to Brown on Friday, Oct. 6 and Yale on Saturday, Oct. 7. Cornell has dominated the Bears, owning a 40-26 record overall and winning 20 of the last 30 meetings after splitting the series last season, while the Bulldogs have won the past 18 meetings to take a 45-25 lead in the all-time series.
