ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior forward
Anthony Angello scored twice and five other players scored to help the Cornell men's hockey team enjoy its best offensive output in nearly 10 years on Friday night in a resounding 7-1 victory over Princeton at Lynah Rink.
Cornell (12-2, 6-1 ECAC Hockey, 4-0 Ivy League) scored three goals in a span of 2 minutes, 24 seconds in the second period after the lone tally from Princeton (6-8-3, 3-6-1, 2-4) to break the game open. Freshman
Brenden Locke's line accounted for seven points on the night – three from Locke's assists, two from Angello goals, and a goal and an assist from junior
Mitch Vanderlaan.
The offensive outburst marks the first time Cornell has potted seven in a game since Feb. 16, 2008, when it defeated Rensselaer by an identical 7-1 score. With this effort coming on the heels of a 6-2 win over Canisius last Saturday, the Big Red has 13 goals over a two-game span for the first time since Oct. 29-30, 2004 (via 7-1 victories over Army and Sacred Heart).
Angello opened the scoring inside the game's 5-minute mark, and Cornell – ranked fourth in the nation in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and fifth in the USCHO.com poll – had several other opportunities to extend the lead before the intermission. Reigning ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week Ryan Ferland made 15 stops in the first to keep Princeton in it.
Though
Yanni Kaldis' unassisted power-play goal early in the second doubled the Cornell lead, that strike was quickly negated 71 seconds later. Two minor penalties called simultaneously on Cornell gave Princeton a lengthy two-man advantage, of which it only needed 36 seconds to convert David Hallisey's sixth power-play goal of the season. The Big Red was able to kill off the subsequent five-on-four, and rocked back from its heels after a few more minutes.
Rauter's highlight-reel goal, a chip shot over Ferland's blocker and he lunged to the ice in the slot, restored Cornell's lead. Freshman forward
Cam Donaldson then scored his first collegiate goal on a breakaway exactly two minutes later, and Angello's second of the night off a rebound of a blocked shot from junior defenseman
Matt Nuttle opened the flood gates. Vanderlaan and sophomore forward
Jeff Malott capped the scoring with third-period goals.
Senior
Hayden Stewart made 21 saves to earn the victory in his third consecutive start in goal, even adding his first assist on Donaldson's goal.
The Big Red's Lineup:
How The Goals Were Scored:
Cornell's 1st Goal
1st period, 4:58 • Angello 4 (Locke, Vanderlaan) • Cornell 1, Princeton 0
• Vanderlaan took a hit at the Cornell blue line to make a pass that sent Angello speeding up his off wing on a two-on-two. He cut in to fire a shot from the top of the left circle that Ferland saved, but he struggled to find the rebound. Locke was crashing down the slot at the time of the original shot, which allowed him to swoop in and poke the loose puck out from under Ferland's gloves, and Angello converted from the top of the crease.
Cornell's 2nd Goal
2nd period, 4:18 • Kaldis 3 (pp) • Cornell 2, Princeton 0
• In the later stages of a power play, Yates sent Donaldson up the right wing through the neutral zone with speed. His attempted pass to Starrett breaking up the slot was broken up, and a Princeton defender tried to sweep the puck out of the zone only to have it picked off at the center point by Kaldis. Drifting toward the top of the left circle, Kaldis snapped a shot that sailed through Yates' screen and into the net.
Princeton's Goal
2nd period, 5:29 • Hallisey 11 (Veronneau, Teves) (pp) • Cornell 2, Princeton 1
• After lots of work up high on the perimeter, the Tigers worked the puck down low. As Teves' pass from the center point found Veronneau about five feet off the post to Stewart's right, Hallisey drifted in from the top of the circle and through the slot. A defender in front slid toward Veronneau, but he was able to find Hallisey drifting toward goal for the easy one-timed tap-in to the far post.
Cornell's 3rd Goal
2nd period, 11:36 • Rauter 5 (Malott, Green) • Cornell 3, Princeton 1
• Betts won a faceoff in the neutral zone and Green's hard ring sent the puck into the zone and around the end boards. As it came up the left half wall, a Princeton defender attempted to ramp the puck past Malott, but it hit his shin pads and deflected toward Rauter at the bottom of the left circle. He collected the puck and tapped it around his defender goal-side, then he went to the other side while falling to the ice in the slot, smacking a backhanded shot over Ferland's blocker.
Cornell's 4th Goal
2nd period, 13:18 • Donaldson 1 (Barron, Stewart) • Cornell 4, Princeton 1
• After the puck bounced around in the corner to Stewart's right, a Princeton forward backhanded the puck toward the goal mouth. Stewart got a piece of it with his paddle down, with the slight deflection allowing the puck to slide just past the reach of the Princeton forward in the slot. Barron got to it and alertly sent a firm pass back to the opposite wing to find Donaldson speeding away past his defender for a breakaway. With the other defenseman closing as Donaldson approached the hash mark, he beat Ferland stickside.
Cornell's 5th Goal
2nd period, 14:00 • Angello 5 (Nuttle, Locke) • Cornell 5, Princeton 1
• Vanderlaan chipped the puck into the zone on the left wing and Locke tied up his defender long enough in the corner to allow Angello to keep possession and wheel up the half wall before taking a shot that was deflected by a defender. Nuttle read the play and attacked from his position on the right point, picking up the puck before circling around behind the net and taking a shot from the lower right circle. The shot was blocked, but the puck found its way to the slot. Angello beat his defender to the top of the crease and smacked the puckk into the wide side of the empty net.
Cornell's 6th Goal
3rd period, 4:20 • Vanderlaan 3 (Smith, Locke) • Cornell 6, Princeton 1
• With the Tigers aggressively defending a Big Red controlled breakout, McCrea's long outlet pass to the neutral zone was tipped by Angello into Locke's path sailing up the left wing. He cut across the goal mouth, but couldn't get a shot on goal – yet he kept possession in the right corner and fed Smith at the center point. As Smith drifted to his left, he wristed a puck toward goal that Vanderlaan redirected out of midair past Halford, who entered the Princeton crease after the second intermission.
Cornell's 7th Goal
3rd period, 11:30 • Malott (Betts, Smith) • Cornell 7, Princeton 1
• Working on the right wing, Malott fed Smith at the center point. Working to his left, Smith sent a puck toward goal that was deftly redirected by Betts back across the slot to find Malott beating his defender off the wall. His shot sailed over the glove of a defenseless Halford.
