ITHACA, N.Y. -- Five players scored in double figures and the Red team hit on 50 percent of its shots and 44 percent from beyond the arc while outrebounding White 38-25 to top their teammates 74-63 on Friday evening at Newman Arena. The annual intrasquad scrimmage, the Big Red's first public appearance, saw plenty of excitement.
Junior college transfer
Thurston McCarty had 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal to lead the winning team, while sophomore
Bryan Knapp added 13.
Josh Warren (12 points, four rebounds),
Jack Gordon (12 points, six rebounds, two assists) and
Kobe Dickson (10 points, seven rebounds, three assists) also reached double figures for Team Red.
Steven Julian chipped in three points and five rebounds, and both
Joel Davis (five points, three rebounds) and
Troy Whiteside (five points, two assists, two rebounds) also contributed to the victory.
Matt Morgan had 20 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead White, while
Jimmy Boeheim added 16 points, four assists and three boards.
Jake Kuhn also reached double figures with 10 points and three boards.
Terrance McBride recorded nine points and three rebounds. Also getting in the scoring column was Rile Voss (four points, four assists and four rebounds),
Chaz Mack (two points, three rebounds) and
Dean Noll (two points, two rebounds). Freshman
Max Samberg also saw his first time in front of the Newman Arena crowd.
The game, played in two 16-minute halves, saw White lead by as many as 11 points in the first half. Red took the lead by the break and cruised to the win in the second half, leading by as many as 13 and holding a double-digit lead much of the final 10 minutes. They hit 7-of-16 from beyond the arc, including 5-of-10 in the first half.
Cornell will play an exhibition game against crosstown rival Ithaca College on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at Newman Arena. The Division III Bombers were 15-11 a season ago and return double figure scorers in junior guard Riley Thompson (13.4 ppg., 2.7 rpg.) and senior forward Peter Ezema (10.3 ppg., 8.9 rpg., 1.7 spg.) for head coach Jim Mullins' team.
