HAMILTON, N.Y. – The No. 22/RV women's lacrosse team slipped past regional rival Colgate, 11-10, thanks to a goal by senior captain
Taylor Reed with 13 seconds left in overtime on Tuesday night at Beyer-Small '76 Field. After being down by a score late in the second half, senior captain
Ida Farinholt tied it up, 10-10, with three minutes and six seconds remaining in regulation and Reed came through in the clutch in extra time to push Cornell to 2-2 (0-1 Ivy) on the season.
The team's victory now marks the 19th-straight win over the Raiders (3-2, 0-0 Patriot) as Colgate last topped Cornell on April 8, 1998 in a 10-6 decision at Schoellkopf Field.
The senior captain duo led the squad with three goals each while junior attacker
Tomasina Leska added in two goals, an assist and three ground balls to help in the winning effort.
With the match tied up 2-2 early in the first half, the Big Red grabbed its first commanding lead of the evening with a four-goal run to put things in its favor, 6-2, 20 minutes into the meeting. The two teams went on to trade goals before the Raiders' Tara Atkinson would register one more score with 23 seconds left in the half to have Cornell head to the locker rooms up 7-4.
Despite the three-goal lead, Colgate would not go quietly, outscoring Cornell 6-3 in the second to deadlock it by the time regulation had concluded.
Following goals by each squad to kick off the second half, the home team notched three scores in a row and followed that up with two more to take its first lead of the game, 10-9, since opening up the match with a goal 2:12 in. But the Big Red was resilient and found the equalizer and the game winner to deny Colgate the upset.
Lucy Pedlow was strong in the draw control, securing five, and goalkeeper Katie McGahan picked up four groundballs.
Joey Coffy and Mary Kate Bonanni each caused two turnovers to lead the defense.
Cornell overall had a bigger presence offensively, take 23 shots on goal to Colgate's 16, but the opposition had a 13-11 advantage in draw controls.
The Big Red went 3-6 from the free position with Farinholt going 2-2 and Caroline Allen converting on her lone attempt from the spot. The Raiders scored on three of their five free position shots.
McGahan played 50:46 and made five saves while
Samantha Nielsen made one save in her 15:01 of action. Colgate's Samantha Croston stopped 12 shots sent her way.
The team is back in action this Saturday at Schoellkopf Field, hosting Columbia for a conference clash. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
