VESTAL, N.Y. – The women's lacrosse team got back into the win column with a big 15-7 victory against Binghamton at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Tuesday night. The win is Head Coach
Jenny Graap's 200th since she coached her first season at Cornell in 1998.
Â
The decision also makes the Big Red a perfect 7-0 against the Bearcats and puts them at a 7-6 record this season while going 5-3 against nonconference opponents.
Â
Nine different Cornell players each got on the scoreboard with Caroline Allen leading the way with a quartet of scores, including one from the free position to give her 15 eight-meter strikes on the year – just two away from tying the program record currently held by Cari Hills (1998).
The team's three captains,
Taylor Reed,
Ida Farinholt and
Sarah Phillips, each added in two goals in the winning effort. Also finding the back of the net was
Tomasina Leska,
Joey Coffy, Alicia O'Neil, Ellie Walsh and Isabel Zachara.
Â
Coffy led all players on the field with seven draw controls, moving her to No. 4 all-time in career draw controls (111) and second in draw controls in a single season (58). Reed had a team-high four ground balls and Farinholt was first on the squad in caused turnovers with three.
Â
Cornell never trailed in the contest after getting out to a 2-0 start, but Binghamton kept things close until the Big Red ripped off five goals in a row in the second half to power to a 14-6 lead with nine minutes left. The visiting squad also had a little three-score run that closed out the first half and opened up the second to keep things just out of reach for the Bearcats as Binghamton was looming with just a one-goal disadvantage.
The home team was paced by Brianne Arthur's four points (3G, 1A) which included two successful eight-meter conversions. Jacqueline Kennedy added in three points (2G, 1A), four ground balls, four draw controls and one caused turnover.
Â
Samantha Nielsen made three saves and picked up one ground ball in her first-ever start. Katie McGahan also got onto the field in the second half, making eight saves and scooping up three ground balls.
Â
Cornell had the slight edge over Binghamton in shots (29-28), ground balls (24-22), clears (21-23, 16-20) and saves (11-8). The Big Red also went 5-of-8 from the free position while the Bearcats were three-of-eight. Both teams split draw controls with 12 each.
