CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The women's lacrosse team went on an epic run in the second half, but just fell short as Cornell closed out its season with a 14-13 loss to Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Harvard stadium. Trailing by seven at the half, the Big Red outscored the Crimson by an 8-2 margin, including a five-goal run, but Harvard (6-9, 2-5 Ivy) managed to hold on to keep Cornell (7-8, 2-5 Ivy) from advancing to the Ivy League Tournament for just the second time since the tournament was established in 2010.
Â
The Big Red run was both sparked and capped-off by Caroline Allen, where all five goals were scored in under six minutes. With 20:07 left to play and down 13-7, Allen took advantage of a turnover and went top shelf to give Cornell some life. At the 14:23 mark, the sophomore struck again to not only put the team within one, but to also tie a 20-year old school record for free position goals in a single season. Allen notched her 17th of the year from the eight-meter, a mark that is only matched by Cari Hills from back in 1998.
Tomasina Leska and senior captain
Ida Farinholt also had a hand in the scoring run, with Farinholt striking twice in a span of 37 seconds while Leska's goal pulled the team within one with 5:47 left to play. The trio of Allen, Leska and Allen had the biggest hand in the goal-scoring for the team with each dolling out hat tricks. Allen had a team-high five points as she also dished out two assists. Senior captain
Taylor Reed, junior captain
Sarah Phillips,
Joey Coffy and Alicia O'Neil all had one goal apiece.
Â
Harvard was led by Julia Glynn's five goals and Keeley MacAfee's hat trick. Glynn leads the nation in goals per game and also went 2-for-3 from the free positon.
Â
The Crimson jumped out to its seven-goal lead in the first half on the strength of two five-goal runs to both begin and end the first half. The home team scored its first five in under eight minutes before Farinholt put a stop to it with a free position strike just over nine minutes in. Cornell eventually went on a little three-score run of its own with 14 minutes left in the half as O'Neil scored her second-career goal in her first-ever start. Allen and Phillips then followed that up with scores of their own before Harvard went on its second run – including three in a row by Glynn – to take a 12-5 lead at the half.
Â
Reed led the squad in draw controls (5) while Farinholt and Allen each added in four. Reed and Coffy had three ground balls while Coffy also forced two of the Crimson's turnovers. Harvard outshot Cornell 24-8 in the first before the Big Red flipped the script in the second and had the shot advantage, 18-7. Cornell also had a slight lead in draw controls (15-14) while the Crimson picked up more ground balls (18-15).
Coffy and Reed leave East Hill has two of the best draw controllers in program history. Coffy is fourth in career draw controls with 115 while Reed is sixth with 107. Coffy's 62 draws this season is also the second-best effort in a single season and was just six away from the program record held by Sarah Hefner (68) in 2014.

Katie McGahan got the start for the Big Red, making five saves in 26:04 before
Samantha Nielsen got in for the rest of the match, stopping two shots. Olivia Gundrum played all 60 minutes for Harvard, making six saves.
