ITHACA, N.Y. — Kieran Burke has joined the Cornell women's tennis program as an assistant coach in advance of the upcoming 2018-19 season, as announced Friday by
Mike Stevens, the Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis.
Burke joins the Big Red with seven years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level. He spent the last two seasons with Colorado as an assistant coach, helping the Buffaloes to a pair of nine-win campaigns. His tutelage helped Linda Huang reach the finals of the ITA Regionals in the fall and Nuria Omerno Ruiz win the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Senior Player of the Year Award for the Mountain Region in 2017.
Before his tenure at Colorado, Burke spent the 2015-16 season as a volunteer assistant at Vanderbilt – a year that saw the Commodores advance to the national semifinals. He worked extensively with ITA All-Americans Francis Altick and Sydney Campbell, who were also all-SEC selections. Altick was also named ITA Most Improved Player during the season. His main responsibilities at Vanderbilt were coaching technique and improving specific areas of players' games through individual workouts, while implementing video analysis and fitness bands to the program.
From 2011-15, Burke was an assistant coach and associate head coach at Boston College. He was responsible for all areas of recruiting and developed training and practice schedules, as well as providing skill instruction. The Eagles saw steady improvement throughout Burke's tenure, winning one ACC match in the season prior to his arrival, to seven conference wins in his final year with the program—the best season in Boston College history. Also in his final season at BC, Jessica Wacnik became the first player in school history to win the Northeast ITA Region singles championship.
Burke also has several years of experience serving as a private coach in the Boston area. A native of Morristown, N.J., Burke earned his bachelor's degree at Harvard and majored in sociology.
