ANNAPOLIS, Md. – On the heels of a tough loss the day prior, the men's squash team rebounded for a 7-2 victory over higher-ranked Navy on Sunday afternoon at Halsey International Squash Courts.
Cornell (3-8), tabbed 16th in the most recent Dunlop College Squash Rankings, won the first five matches to be completed to clinch the victory against No. 13 Navy (12-3) in its first visit to Annapolis since 2003. It also helped salvage a weekend that started with a tough 5-4 loss at No. 17 Franklin & Marshall.
Much like Saturday's tilt against the Diplomats, the Big Red found itself in several close matches against he Midshipmen – but this time, it prevailed in most of them.
Jared Scherl slid into the No. 9 spot of the lineup and cruised to win in three games, but
Perry Hanson had much more of a battle in a 12-10, 15-13, 11-9 win at No. 3.
V. Luke Park II wrapped up the opening-rotation sweep by rallying to win in four games at No. 6.
Charles Culhane won handily at No. 2, and
Yohann Surti fought back to win in four at No. 8 to give Cornell the necessary five points to win. The last two points came in lengthy affairs, with
Nikhil Arjunan Iyer coming from two games down to win in five at No. 7 and senior
Andy Muran outlasting his opponent at No. 1, 11-5, 16-14, 10-12, 11-4.
