ITHACA, N.Y. — Freshman
Jack Malone scored with less than three minutes in the second half, then the Red team got shootout goals from
Amy Curlew and
Tristan Mullin to complete a come-from-behind 5-4 in the annual Red/White Game on Friday night at Lynah Rink.
The intrasquad game featured two 30-minute halves. The men's and women's teams alternated pairs of shifts throughout. Power plays were awarded evenly at set times throughout the game, as were a couple four-on-four situations. Any infractions that were detected by the officials resulted in penalty shots. While there were several penalties called, the teams' goaltenders were outstanding against penalty shots with only one goal surrendered in 13 opportunities.
The first half featured just three goals. Freshman
Sydney Breza opened the scoring in the women's team's opening shifts to give White an early lead. Red equalized on a shorthanded two-on-one goal by
Maddie Mills off a feed from senior
Kristin O'Neill. White took a 2-1 lead into the intermission after the men's team's first goal of the night, coming from the half wall off the stick of freshman defenseman
Peter Muzyka.
The game opened up a little more in the second half with
Bella Kang scoring only penalty-shot goal of the night to tie the score at the 1:47 mark. Just 36 seconds later, White took the lead back with a wraparound goal by sophomore forward
Liam Motley. Junior forward
Brenden Locke assisted the goal, then also earned a secondary assist on White's fourth goal with 10:14 left on the clock. Sophomore forward
Max Andreev scored off a feed from junior
Morgan Barron for the night's only power-play goal.
But Red would ultimately storm back, pulling to within one with 2:42 to play. After prolonged pressure in the White zone, Malone cashed in a rebound of a Mullin shot. Red then pulled its goaltender to create a six-on-five, but it couldn't equalize before the game-ending shootout. Three shooters for each team from both the men's and women's teams partook in the shootout, with Red ultimately prevailing. For the women's team, junior goaltender
Ally Dalaya didn't surrender any goals on eight attempts at either penalty shot or shootout attempts.
The Cornell women's team will now prepare for its season debut next weekend, when it hosts a pair of non-league games against Robert Morris at Lynah Rink. The series opens at 6 p.m. Friday, then concludes with a 3 p.m. game Saturday. The Big Red men's team will embark on its two exhibition games, starting with a 2 p.m. Sunday visit from Nipissing before it hosts the National Team Development Program's Under-18 team at 7 p.m. Saturday.
