Field Hockey Looks Forward to Senior Day Before Traveling to Syracuse

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell field hockey team looks for a successful weekend against Brown and #15 Syracuse. The Big Red will be hosting its Senior Day against Brown during its final home game of 2019.

  • This Brown game is the last of 13 out of 17 games on the Big Red's schedule to be broadcast on ESPN+, including all Cornell home games and all Ivy League road games.

About the Big Red

  • Cornell is off to its best start since 2014 with an 8-5 record with wins against #18 Syracuse (2-1, 9/7), Lock Haven (2OT) (3-2, 9/8), Lafayette (4-1, 9/23), Colgate (4-1, 10/1), Columbia (2OT SO) (1-0, 10/5), Yale (2-1, 10/13), Bucknell (1-0, 10/15) and Lehigh (4-0, 10/23).
  • Junior forward Grace Royer leads the team with 15 points on five goals and five assists. She scored goals against Lafayette (2), Penn (2), and Colgate. She notched assists against Syracuse, Lafayette, Colgate, Yale and Lehigh.
  • Sophomore forward Claire Jones follows Royer with 11 points on four goals and three assists. The sophomore scored two game-winning goals in the first weekend and has assisted on goals against Penn and Colgate. She later scored two goals against Yale.
  • Freshman midfielder Caroline Ramsey follows Jones with nine points on four goals and one assist. She scored goals against Syracuse, Lock Haven, Lafayette and Colgate. She notched one assist against Lehigh.
  • Totaling 23 wins in her career, senior goalie Maddie Henry's eight wins on the season have led her to the runner-up position in Cornell's career record list. She needs three more wins to pass Kelly Johnson (2014-17), who has 25 wins in her career.

  • After a rough weekend with two losses, the Big Red had four players get their first goal on the season to earn a 4-0 victory against Lehigh, October 23.
  • Junior Juliana Tardif scored her first goal of 2019 while sophomore Avery Smith, freshman Natalie Stone and freshman Isabella Palde each scored their first collegiate goals.
 

About Brown

  • Brown has played four consistently ranked teams, including Providence, Albany, Harvard and Princeton. The Bears feel to each of the ranked teams but found victories against Bryant (3-0, 9/7), Hofstra (3-0, 9/22), Dartmouth (3-1, 10/5), Cal (3-2, 10/10) and Holy Cross (1-0, 10/16).
  • Sophomore midfielder/forward Danielle van Rootselaar leads the team with 18 points on seven goals and four assists. She has had two multi-goal games, with one goal scored against Holy Cross and one assist made against Harvard.
  • Senior midfielder/defender Hannah Leckey follows with 10 points on four goals and two assists. 
  • Each of the three Brown goalkeepers have shared the game minutes relatively evenly. Freshman Calista Manuzza has started seven of 13 games for the Bears with a .556 save percentage in 315 minutes. Allee Ayles follows with five starts and a .622 save percentage in 266:53, while Jodie Brine has five starts and a .800 save percentage in 198:07.
 

The Series vs Brown

  • With a 4-3 double overtime Bear victory in 2012, Brown snapped Cornell's six-game winning streak against the Bears. 
  • The Big Red rebounded with a five-game winning streak from 2013-17 but the streak was once again stopped by Brown in 2018 with a 2-0 Cornell loss.
  • Cornell leads the all-time series, 21-17-2.
 

About Syracuse

  • Syracuse has played against seven ranked teams, #14 Saint Joseph's, #5 Virginia, #2 Duke, #16 Stanford, #1 North Carolina, #13 Boston College and #3 UConn. The Orange has found victories against #3 UConn, #2 Duke and #14 Saint Joseph's, while falling against #5 Virginia, #16 Stanford, #1 North Carolina and #13 Boston College. Syracuse's one loss against a non-ranked team came against Cornell on Dodson Field as the Big Red opened its 2019 season.
  • Freshman forward Charlotte De Vries leads the team with 27 points on 13 goals and one assist. De Vries has three multi-goal games on the season, and has gone just four games without a goal.
  • Junior midfielder Claire Cooke follows with eight points on three goals and two assists. Most recently, Cooke scored a goal against Boston College. 
  • Junior defender/midfielder Lenke Havas follows with 15 points on five goals and five assists. In the last week, she scored one goal against Sacred Heart.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Sinck has played for most of the Orange's game minutes. In 745:57, Sinck has made 53 saves for a .736 save percentage.
 

The Series vs Syracuse

  • The Big Red first played the Orange in 1979 and Syracuse has dominated from the beginning to earn a 29-3-1 all-time record against Cornell.
  • Cornell's first two victories came in 1983 in the Carrier Dome and 2007 on Coyne Field. 
  • The Big Red's first home victory, and most recent result, against Syracuse was in September. Cornell opened the 2019 season, and Andy Smith's Cornell career, with a 2-1 victory over the Orange.
 

National Appeal

  • The Big Red has eight different states, as well as Canada and South Africa, represented on the team of 23.
  • For the first year New Jersey ties Pennsylvania as the most represented state. Pennsylvania has been the most represented state since 2015. A total of 10 players call New Jersey or Pennsylvania home, five each. The other states with multiple representatives are New York (3) and Texas (2), plus one student-athletes from Connecticut, Maine, Maryland and Texas. 
  • There are three international student-athletes as well, two from British Columbia, Canada
  • and one from South Africa.
  • In addition to our athletes, we have two coaches from California (Hurff and Dempsey), one from Delaware (Orozco) and head coach Andy Smith hails from Doncaster, England.
 

Head Coach Andy Smith

  • After serving as the head coach of the field hockey team at the University of the Pacific, Smith was named the head coach of the Cornell field hockey team in May of 2019. 
  • Smith comes to East Hill after leading the Pacific Tigers to four regular-season conference titles in six seasons. Smith also coached four student-athletes to All-American honors, in addition to five athletes being selected to participate in FIH World level events.
  • Smith brings a new staff of assistant coaches to Cornell this season. Laura Hurff and Johnny Orozco joined the Big Red staff as assistant coaches after successful stints in their respective USA National Teams. Taylor Dempsey joins the team as a volunteer assistant coach after a decorated playing career at the University of the Pacific.
