#3 Women's Ice Hockey Hosts Quinnipiac, #6 Princeton to Open ECAC Hockey Play

ITHACA, N.Y. - The #3 Cornell women's ice hockey team opens ECAC Hockey play with two home games against Quinnipiac and #6 Princeton.

About the Big Red

  • After its opening weekend, the Big Red was tabbed to finish third by the USCHO Division I Women's Poll.
  • Cornell beat #8 Robert Morris with two shutouts on Friday (Oct. 25), 6-0, and Saturday (Oct. 26), 3-0. 
  • With just two games on the season, sophomore forward Gillis Frechette leads the team with six points on three goals and three assists. 
  • Senior defender Jaime Bourbonnais follows closely with five points on one goal and four assists.
  • Junior forward Maddie Mills is ranked third on the team in points (3) with two goals and one assist.
  • Junior goalie Lindsay Browning opened the season with two shutouts. She is the first Cornell goalie to start the season with a shutout since 2007 when Jenny Niesluchowski stood in goal against Vermont for a 3-0 victory. Browning is just the second goalie to start with two straight shutouts in program history; the 1988-89 team earned a 4-0 win at St. Lawrence and a 5-0 win against Hamilton to begin its season.

  • With six new freshmen taking the ice this weekend, the Big Red will be looking for some first career points during the 2019-20 season.
 

About Quinnipiac

  • After seven games, the Bobcats are 4-2-1. Before starting ECAC Hockey play on Oct. 29, Quinnipiac played three two-game series against Providence (Oct. 4-5), Maine (Oct. 11-12) and Sacred Heart (Oct. 25-26). The Bobcats went 2-1-1 against Providence and Maine before winning both games against Sacred Heart with shutouts (6-0 on Oct. 25 and 5-0 on Oct. 26). The Bobcats began ECAC Hockey play on Tuesday (Oct. 29) with a 4-2 loss against #6 Princeton.
  • Sophomore forward Lexie Adzija, freshman defender Kate Reilly and senior defender Kenzie Prater lead the team with five points each.
  • Adzjia has two goals and three assists on the season, while Reilly and Prater have each notched one goal and four assists.
  • Prater and junior forward Brooke Bonsteel scored the Bobcat goals against Princeton.
  • Senior goalie Abbie Ives leads the goaltenders with 100 saves for a .909 save percentage in 304:27. Sophomore goalie Logan Angers follows with 30 saves in 119:58.
 

The Series vs Quinnipiac

  • The Big Red first played against Quinnipiac during the 2003-04 season and, since then, the Big Red has maintained a 16-9-7 series lead.
  • In both games of the 2018-19 season, the Big Red beat the Bobcats. For the first game, Cornell won, 2-1, as the visitor in November before hosting Quinnipiac for another 2-1 win in January.
 

About Princeton

  • Princeton is ranked #6 by both the USCHO.com and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine.
  • After three games, the Tigers have earned three wins, starting with Syracuse on Oct. 25 and Oct. 26. Princeton opened ECAC Hockey play with a 4-2 win against Quinnipiac on Oct. 29.
  • Sophomore forward Sarah Fillier leads the team with six points on two goals and four assists, while sophomore forward Maggie Connors follows closely with five points on one goal and four assists.
  • Fillier notched two goals and one assist against Quinnipiac and Connors collected one goal and one assist against the Bobcats.
  • Senior goalie Stephanie Neatby has spent 119:55 in goal with 64 saves and two goals against for one shutout against Syracuse on Oct. 26, while junior goalie Rachel McQuigge spent one game in goal for 22 saves and one goal against.
 

The Series vs Princeton

  • The series between Cornell and Princeton has been alive since the 1974-74 season with the Tigers holding a 47-44-6 all-time advantage.
  • During the 2018-19 season, Cornell was not able to overcome Princeton. As the visitor, the Big Red tied the Tigers, 2-2 in November before hosting Princeton for a 5-0 loss in January.
 

Two Peas in a Pod

  • Micah Zandee-Hart and Kristin O'Neill will be serving as the team's captains for the second year.
  • Zandee-Hart led the 2018-19 squad with 55 blocks, while also finishing third with 17 assists and sixth with 21 points.
  • O'Neill led last year's team with 22 goals while finishing second in points (38) and tying for first in power-play goals (7).
 

Border Battle

  • Out of the 28 players on the roster, 19 are from the United States while nine call Canada home. 
  • The Americans have representatives from Minnesota (5), California (2), New York (2), Massachusetts (2), Michigan (1), Iowa (1), Illinois (1), Pennsylvania (1), Virginia (1) and Connecticut (1).
  • The Canadians on the roster come from five different provinces: Ontario (5), New Brunswick (1), Saskatchewan (1), British Columbia (1) and Newfoundland and Labrador (1).
 

About Head Coach Doug Derraugh

  • Now entering his 15th season directing the Cornell women's ice hockey program in 2019-20, Doug Derraugh has brought the Big Red women to their place among the nation's elite.
  • Derraugh has a 267-150-42 record in his first 14 seasons as the head coach of the Big Red, with his 200th coming in the form of a 4-2 win against Yale in 2016.
  • Cornell has made the ECAC Hockey Tournament each of the last 12 seasons, won the tournament four of the last 10 years and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in seven of those seasons.
  • The 2019 American Hockey Coaches Association National Coach of the Year guided the Big Red to the national title game in his fifth season and back-to-back-to-back NCAA Frozen Four appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Cornell returned to the NCAA Frozen Four in 2019 after finishing as National Quarter Finalists in 2013, 2014 and 2017.
  • He led the team to five consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in program history in 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14.
 

About Associate Head Coach Edith Racine

  • Edith Racine enters her first season as the associate head coach after serving as an assistant coach for 10 years prior. 
  • Under her direction, the Big Red has seen vast improvement among its goaltenders. During her time at Lynah, Racine has most notably coached Amanda Mazzota, Lauren Slebodnick, Paula Voorheis and Marlene Boissonnault.
  • During her first season with the Big Red, Racine coached Mazzota to finish as the national leader in shutouts (11) in the 2009-10 season, breaking the Cornell single season record for both men's and women's ice hockey. Mazzota was also the national leader for goals against average (1.11) after the close of the 2010-11 season, as well as the runner-up in save percentage. 
  • Slebodnick finished her career with the top spot in Cornell history for career wins (68) and sixth-best goals against average in the nation during the 2012-13 season.
  • Voorheis was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team in 2013-14. She finished her career after the 2016-17 campaign ranked second all-time in save percentage (.925) and saves (2,238) and third in goals against average (2.14). 
  • Most recently, Racine coached Marlene Boissonnault to national success. Boissonnault finished her senior season (2018-19) ranked second in the nation, and first in the ECAC, in goals against average (1.64). Boissonnault was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week six times in her career (2x in 2018-19 and 4x in 2017-18). She finished the second-winningest goalie in program history with 56 wins.

  • After its first ECAC weekend, the Big Red will be going north to face St. Lawrence and Clarkson for its first road games on the 2019-20 season.
